On a recent family trip to Udaipur, we booked 2 nights at Shiv Niwas and 2 nights at Oberoi Udaivillas. We specifically booked Shiv Niwas as we wanted to stay in the Palace complex for 1/2 our stay.....and booked about 5 months in advance. 48 hours before our arrival we rec'd an e-mail that "due to an overbooking situation" we... We absolutely loved Udaipur and this hotel too! Staying in an old palace, made our trip around India truly special. There is a great old charm at this hotel, the furnishings are as you would expect a palace to be, so don't expect a modern hotel with modern furnishings. The room was large and the bathroom too. We had an... More

We stayed in the guest suites in this former palace for royal guest accomodation. Our rooms had marble lobbies, huge bedrooms with sofas, an office, a dressing room, a vast bathroom, all except the lobby overlooking the lake. Dinner was served around the swimming pool and underneath the stars. So this is what official visits are like for celebrities and... More

Extremely nice hotel. Extremely Romantic, rooms so well decorated and tasteful. We had a balcony and a courtyard overlooking lake - so dreamy. Didn't want to leave hotel. Must rate with some of the most romantic hotels of the world. (although Leela Palace is possibly still better, and Taj Lake Palace is up there too and they are all in... More

I booked a standard room at $170 and left feeling ripped off. The grounds were lovely, beautiful pool, and it was cool staying in a palace. BUT the standard room was poorly furnished from what looked like flea market furniture. The room, as many say, is below par and definitely a two-star place. The bath had a bare fluorescent ceiling... My husband and I stayed at Shiv Niwas Palace hotel in the standard room - that was disappointing. The rooms were small and more like a 2 or 3 star. Apparently the suites were much nicer. The standard rooms could do with some upgrading. The fact of being on the palace grounds was really an experience. The pool bar was... More

I'm sure the hotel is lovely, but we came for a quick lunch here as the terrace bar of the Fateh Prakash was closed, and were quite horrified. There was a constant smell of boiled cabbage (presumably) from the kitchens, and all the textiles had food stains on them - the menu cover (and most of the pages), the napkins... More

We stayed for two nights part way through a month long stay in India. From the reviews on TA we thought it would be the break we needed and were not disappointed. The entrance to the complex is impressive. The layout of the whole place is quite beautiful and very well maintained. We stayed in a double cottage which was... More

The palace and its grounds are superb. The pool courtyard area is stunning and we had a couple of great meals there. The food, both Indian and western was excellent, as was breakfast. There are various places to eat including the magnificent terrace looking over the lake. We had a spa massage and it was not good. Anokhi sells good... More

After researching Rajastan, we decided to stay in Udaipur for 7 nights to allow enough time to experience as much of this wonderful city as possible. Initially, we had planned to stay at the Lake Palace Hotel, which is a beautiful hotel, but later decided on the Shiv Niwaz Palace Hotel. We are extremely happy and thankful that we made... More
