Lots of other good hotels in Kaohsiung. Our room was filled by cigarette smoke throughout the night by the HVAC system. The staff laughed when we told them of our problem the next morning. Also, if you are taller than 5'6'' you will not fit on their beds. Worst night we had during our two week trip to Taiwan.

I stayed one week at the Kingship hotel in Kao-hsiung, which is just a few blocks from the harbor. Overall I had a great stay, and the service was excellent. My stay was in early January.
