Should the rating be done entirely based on the way you are treated and serviced while in the ryokan it would have been 5. It is our experience from Japan, that Japanese who only speak a few words in English become very shy when they are dealing with a foreigner. But not the ladies at Tanabe, who bring the food... More

Probably this is one of the best opportunities to have a sense of staying in an japan style Ryokan. Sleeping in the tatami, have a dinner cooked in you room, tea ceremony, hotsprings. This Ryokan is one of the best. I have stayed in different Ryokans in Kyoto before buy I would strongly recommend this Ryokan. Mrs. Tanabe is a... More

As soon as we arrived at Tanabe Ryokan we knew we had made a great choice. LOCATION: Centrally located, an easy flat walk from the train station and close to the old town and morning market. You cant get any better! TYPE OF ROOM: We had a ‘small sized room’ in the main wing (703) which we booked via the... More

A Friend and I stayed here for one night in Japan, the highlight of our trip. Close to the train station and the main shopping street. We were warmly welcomed and treated to such hospitality by the owner and the staff. The tea on arrival was a wam treat. The dinner and breakfast in our room was exquisite. We slept... More

We stayed here for two nights in March en route to Kyoto. The hotel is centrally located and an easy walking distance from the train station. Staff were friendly and courteous, although their english is limited and our japanese non-existent. Breakfast and dinner were gastronomic highlights and the overall experience was unforgettable.

Not so inexpensive, but quite an incredible Japanese experience. My kinds loved it, including the onsen (although quite a simple one). The owner, Mrs Akiko, is a fantastic lady that despite her not-so-young age still rides a bike around town. Breakfast and dinner in the room are culinary experiences that we will not forget so soon. And as big surprise,... More

We stopped here en-route from a week in Tokyo to Kyoto. It is an excellent stop off point to wind down and relax. From our arrival, the not so young staff here made us feel extremely welcome and took our cases to the rooms. The experience here is what you would consider as the true traditional type of Japanese accommodation... More

We had a wonderful stay at Ryokan Tanabe and were sad to leave after only two nights. The ryokan is easy walking distance from Takayama station although plenty of taxis are available. It has twenty rooms. We received a lovely welcome at the door from the owner, Akiko Tanabe, who can speak English. Four of us travelling together had two traditional... More

We stayed in this ryokan in a non-smoking traditional tatami room (triple share) for 2 nights in early April. We had booked via JTB in Australia since we found that it was easier that way. I understand though that it is possible to book via their website if you know someone who could read Japanese. The owner Akiko Tanabe speaks... More

Was not too difficult to find our Tanabe Ryokan. A petite, hunched elderly woman by the name of Akiko (Tanabe) welcomed us so passionately, we felt like hugging her. She was so cheery, so full of positivity, she turned our weariness into readiness to explore Takayama. With God's blessings, we were there to absorb the beauty of sakura flowers which... More
