This Ryokan is very well located in the centre of Nara. You can walk there from Nara JR station. The bedroom was traditional with tatamis on the floor... We slept very well in it. The toilet / sink area was clean. There is a japanese common shower/bath area for ladies and for men. Very clean as well. The only complain... More

Conveniently located in the middle of Naramachi, the old part of Nara, Ryokan Matsumae is a great place to stay. We stayed there with our three children in one big room on the second floor. The room was spacious with a small toilet and bathroom; we used the public bath down stairs which was very clean. One night we ate... More

I had a fantastic one night stay in this beautiful, comfortable Ryokan thanks to the kind, attentive service from Naokisan and Naomisan. They speak perfect English and were very helpful in telling me where to go, how and even helped me plan my route to Koyasan better than my original directions. As for the ryokan itself, it is an easy... More

From the moment my husband and I arrived we loved this ryokan. Naomi and her staff were so welcoming and helpful. The room was very comfortable and clean with tastefull traditional Japanese decor. The doonas were a dream. The style suited us very well with private toilet and basin and a common bath which we really enjoy. The Japanese breakfast... More

A friend and I stayed at the ryokan Matsumae last november. We were excited because we read good reviews about it, and it was going to be different from all our other nights in hostels. First of all it was really hard to find the place. Once we finally got there, we had to wait 20 minutes in the lobby... More

This is the best low-cost ryokan that I have stayed in in years of traveling in Japan. The people are very friendly and helpful--they even did my laundry for me when I asked about using the washing machine. Spotlessly clean and warm (in winter when I was there). My six mat room was very comfortable and tastefully furnished, and had... More

Beautiful traditional Japanese hotel. The staff speaks great English and they clearly value their guests. They want to take pictures of you before you leave and they display their gifts from pasts guests all over the lobby. They accept credit card. Wifi is available in the lobby only. Onsen is small but there's few guests so there aren't usually other... More

We stayed here for one night whilst in Nara. We had a 10 tatami mat room without a private bathroom (but with a toilet and wash basin). The room was very big (we had stayed in smaller before with no problems) and fairly modern in decor. The bath for us to use was communal and separated male - female with... More
