It's very difficult to choose the right Ryokan with a choice of top ones in similar bracket. Well I haven't stayed at an any of those but I am glad that I chose this one. My wife and I stayed at Shiraume for one night. I wanted to get the traditional Japanese experience and we got just that. Upon arrival... More

We went to Kyoto for one day trip only for Shiraume, which highly recommended on website. The fact is, all the reviews did not exaggerate. We took a cab from Kyoto station which cost 1200yen around 11am, Tomoko welcomed us at entrance and kept our luggage. Since it's our first time visit in Kyoto so Tomoko suggested us to the... More

I booked this Ryokan because I wanted to have an affordable experience is a traditional Japanese Ryokan bed and breakfast and this is everything you can expect of this experience and more. Location, service, rooms, traditional Japanese jacuzzi, Japanese breakfast, an unbelievable 10 dishes Japanese kaisei dinner, I can find absolutely nothing negative about the place, everything was superb, but... We spent a night in Shiraume. Though it was pricey, the experience was worth every cent. We booked a room with private bath and breakfast. The room is facing the canal and we could look out from our room to the streets of Gion. There were many restaurants along the streets opposite the Ryokan and because of that, we could... More

I cannot say enough about this place. First, it is located in THE best location in the Gion district. It cannot get any better, right in front of the river. There were tourists taking pictures of this Ryokan every few minutes because it is so picturesque. The staff is absolutely fantastic, attentive to your every needs and extremely knowledgeable about... More

We spent some three nights with our two children and a friend, my wife arrived before I did and called me to say that she landed in "doll house". The location is remarkable, in the heart of Kyoto, alongside a small river in a quiet street. This service was spectacular, with attention to every detail and intelligence in the response... More

There is a reason why Shiraume has such an esteemed reputation amongst the ryokan of Kyoto. It's the fantastic location. It's the delightfully decorated and spotlessly clean traditional rooms. It's the careful attention to every tiny detail. Most of all, though, it's the gracious, attentive service from Tomoko and her staff which outshines even the finest big-city hotels. From the... More

If you've decided that you want the ryokan experience while in Kyoto then this really has to be on your list of possibles. Yes, it's expensive (all the good ryokans are) but once you've done it you'll understand why. The level of service that Tomoko-san and her team of ladies provide their guests is quite extraordinary. Shiraume has to be... More

All the previous reviews paint the picture. Shiraume is lovely. We had 2 rooms for one night, both were spacious and contained lots of extras like a coffee machine, tv and dvd player, underfloor heating etc. Our room had an attached bathroom which was very nice. My father had to book one of the 2 communal bathrooms for his wash,... More

The reviews really speak for themselves with this picture perfect ryokan. The old adage, you get what you pay for is very true. This place isn't cheap to stay at but it is worth every Penney and if you can save a few dollars on other locations to experience this place, I suggest you do. If you love Japanese culture... More
