Stayed here on the World Tea Tours - Tea Tour of Japan 2019. A wonderful, quiet, traditional ryokan up in the hills and outside of the noise of Kyoto. Excellent service and food. Had our own tea ceremony in the pavilion that runs along the small river. Would certainly stay again. Small onsen but I was alone most of the time.

It’s true, they really do make you feel like family here. Their service goes above and beyond, and the food is so delicious. At dinner served by the riverside another group invited me to join them; the owner helped to translate and we had a great time laughing and sharing stories. It was the highlight of my entire trip and I want to thank the staff for making it happen! Come here and spend at least two nights so you can really take in the scenery, walk to the local temples, relax in your yukata by the river and get away from the crowds. I went in early September- later in the autumn may be more busy with people coming to see the leaves change. I felt safe in the area as a solo female traveler and will definitely be back!

Nice ryokan in Takao, surrounded by rivers and mountains, a nice escape away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Took JR bus 3 from central exit of Kyoto station, takes about 45mins ride, 520yen. We called the hotel when boarding the bus, and they arranged to pick us up from the bus stop, everything is perfect. We stayed for one night, and when we checked out, there is a shuttle bus service to Saga Arashiyama JR station. Dinner and breakfast are included, which taste wonderful! A great experience, trying out the public bath, and wearing the Yukata. A few famous temples nearby, but many steps to climb up. Overall an awesome ryokan experience which one should try out at least once for any visit to Japan! Not forgetting to mention, all the staff are very very friendly and give a homely kind of feel! Highly recommended! Really value for money! …

This beautiful place is located in a picturesque village an hour outside of Kyoto, reachable by JR bus from the Kyoto station. The ryokan is a bit dated like other reviewers mentioned but to me that did not take away from the charm. We had a balcony facing the river and fell asleep listening to rushing water outside - so peaceful. The onsen on site was very nice and I definitely recommend checking it out. Breakfast was tasty and so was dinner - we opted in for the first night we were there. But what really makes this place is the staff - they are welcoming, friendly and will go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. They gave us rides to the station, helped us navigate the area despite the language barrier. Make sure to check out the three temples that are so close to the ryokan and dedicate a day to just being in Takao area. Location was a struggle for us. There is nothing around the area and it takes an hour by bus to get there. We wanted to explore some touristy places very early in the morning but that was made impossible due to bus schedule/distance of the ryokan. I would only recommend staying here one night and booking a more centrally located hotel for the rest of your stay. Definitely experience this and enjoy the area but do it just for Takao and save the rest of your Kyoto explorations for when you're staying close to downtown.…

We stayed here for four nights while visiting the Kyoto area. Situated about 30-40 minutes outside of Kyoto, the area is full of beautiful nature and scenery away from the crowds of tourists in Kyoto. The hotel is older, but is impeccably clean and has a vintage charm as if you were staying with a traditional Japanese family. They truly go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable through their generous hospitality. Need a ride into Kyoto? They have a daily 10am shuttle to take you there. Need laundry done? The owner’s sister will provide you a laundry basket for your dirty clothes and return it to you the next morning nicely washed and folded for no charge. Get sick? They will hand deliver you water, Japanese medicine, and provide you your meal directly in your room. Enjoy their delicious breakfast in the morning, catch their comfortable hotel shuttle to your Kyoto destination, then come back to the hotel afterwards to enjoy their onsen and soothe your tired body from a day of sightseeing. After the onsen, enjoy a delicious dinner and get a good nights rest. Or spend the day hiking up the hills to see some incredible views in absolute peace and tranquility far away from the crowds. Don’t forget to open the windows and listen to the sounds of the gentle river flowing 15 feet from your window. But more than the service, you truly feel their sincere warmth and kindness. It is the perfect relaxing retreat during your time in Kyoto. Come with a heart of gratitude and leave feeling relaxed and loved. A truly amazing and unforgettable experience. …

What can I say to suitably describe this hotel? From the moment we stepped on to the premises, we were overwhelmed by this magical location. The staff came out to greet us and were super friendly. Contrary to popular belief, the whole world does not speak fluent English and this includes many of the people of Japan. Despite this, the staff made every effort to explain the amenities of the hotel, the food, the rooms, the onsen (public bath) and the local tourist attractions. The rooms were beautiful and spacious with fully functioning air con. There was a traditional tea set in the room as well as futons and a TV. They are also happy for people with tattoos to use the onsen as it is only open to people in the hotel. The food was insane good! Breakfast is included and it was a different meal every day. You can eat dinner in the restaurant on the river in the evenings, a little on the pricey side but if you want a truly delicious, traditional dining experience you need go no further. The staff even took the time to sit with us and show us how to cook/appropriately eat the food. No, really, you'll need it. The main attraction in Takao is the shrines which are beautiful and a must-see! There is a lot of hiking to do and if you go exploring you can find places to paddle in the stream. At the top of the mountain the view is overwhelmingly beautiful. Should you decide to venture further the staff will drive you to the bus stop where you can go in to various parts of Kyoto to do shopping and exploring. I can't thank the staff at this hotel enough, you made our honeymoon absolutely wonderful, I can't wait to come back again!…

Thank you for writing. It is embarrassing in this era, I think that many things have not been conveyed because English knowledge is scarce. However, we are very saved because we cooperate to understand the poor English we speak, so that the customer understands, thank you. We are very pleased that you got used to your good memories.

This ryokan is not so far from the very center of Kyoto while it's a wonderful opportunity to escape from the commercial city and come back to the traditional Japan. Bedroom is open on the river flowing under your window with plenty of trees and flowers as azaleas all around up to the hills. From this pretty location, you can walk up the hill nearby to the various temples far from the major tourist flows visiting for instance the Kinkaku - Ji. Dinners and breakfasts are taken on tatamis according to the traditional use. Perhaps some refurbishment appear necessary for the bathroom. Personnel is helpful and welcoming. This stay at Takao Kanko will be a great souvenir.

We are staying at this hotel at the moment & are so happy with our choice. The owner & her staff have made us feel very special & been really helpful & informative. We were collected from the bus stop, greeted at the hotel & shown our wonderful Japanese room with stunning views of the trees, cherry blossoms & river. We were served tea in the traditional way in our room. Later we walked to Takaosan Jingoji Temple, fabulous vistas on route. We were 3 of the only people there which made the experience very peaceful. We returned to the hotel & welcomed straight away, then enjoyed the Japanese baths at the hotel, resplendent in our kimonos! Later we were served delicious treats in the Banquet Hall with wonderful views, including kobe beef. We are now chilling in our gorgeous room & feeling very lucky to be here for 2 nights. Definitely recommend!!!…

On our too-short trip to Japan we were torn between visiting Kyoto or a mountain ryokan. With Takao Kanko we got both! Less than an hour from Kyoto station, it's in another world -- clear rushing stream, mountain air, lush woods, hot baths. Service was like at a 5-star hotel -- our every wish was catered too. We enjoyed dinner in the outdoor shelter by the stream, and breakfast in a room with big windows with a view. We hiked up to the beautiful temple in woods where we could "throw our burdens away" by tossing clay amulets across the deep valley. Next time, we'll leave time to hike the amazing Kyoto Trail from the hotel. We'd recommend that to any mountain bikers too.

We stayed here in low season so the hotel was quiet. It's in a very peaceful location by the river, which you can hear from your room. The staff were all wonderful & we felt like royalty. They made every effort to make our stay enjoyable, helping with day trips & travel arrangements. The food was fantastic, very very Japanese so you have to be adventurous & open to new tastes & textures . The rooms are basic but comfortable & the low table with built-in heater & blanket was bliss. There is great walking around the area
