We had a lovely time at the Atagoya Guest House, although we spent most of our time out of it touring kyoto and other cities. Clean, comfortable, with a very kind owner, Kenji (pictured here). Arriving a little later than expected due to there only being space on a later JR train, Kenji showed us our room and sat with us for a good while supplying tips and recommendations for the surrounding area and further beyond. Drinking water, free tea and coffee, use of a fridge were available. There is also a 24 hour supermarket called Lawson only a minute away which we found useful as most of the shops, restaurants etc close quite early. It was rather expensive for our 4 night stay, although we did visit in the height of tourism season so the rules of supply and demand are always in play.

I booked the night of 16 May at Guest House Atagoya as part of a two-week trip, whilch I unfortunately had to cancel when I came down with pneumonia and my doctor advised me not to travel. I cancelled my stay on the morning of 9 May, which to me certainly looks like seven days in advance of my stay. Booking.com agreed and sent me a confirmation of successful cancellation. Two days later, I found that Guest House Atagoya had charged my credit card for the night's fee. No notification or explanation; they just ran my card without my knowledge after the booking agent had confirmed my successful cancellation. When I inquired, I was told that the cancellation would have had to be made on 8 May, not 9 May. They rejected the letter from my doctor explaining my inability to travel, stating the cancellation was made a day too late (although still an entire week prior to my scheduled stay) and they "must adhere to their policies." Well, I must adhere to my principles as well, and those include avoiding doing business with people as shady, inflexible, and unreasonable as those who run Guest House Atagoya. If they want your cancellation 8 days before your scheduled arrival, they should say that. (The fact that it is even a 7 day cancellation policy is pretty unreasonable, if you ask me. But I believed that I had met that deadline.) My recommendation is to avoid dealing with this establishment.

Had an excellent stay here at Guest House Atagoya. Mr. Kenji Wada, the owner and manager of the ryoukan is so hospitable and so kind to us. I was with three of my friends and due to the long queue at the immigration, we arrived at the guest house late at night. But Mr. Wada was so kind to still accommodate us and he even went as far as giving us orientations on how to go to the tourist sites (train and bus information). We got some savings because we only get the ¥500 all-day pass for Kyoto bus thru him. Guest House Atagoya is a traditional Japanese house or a ryoukan. We slept on the tatami mat with a futon. The room has a heater/airconditioning unit. There is one shared bathroom downstairs and shared kitchen. Mr Wada provides free coffee and free use of kitchen utensils. There are also free toiletries in the bathroom. It is also near the Saga-arashiyama train station and near (walking distance) from all tourist spots in Arashiyama. So conveniently located and we frequent this Japanese restaurant nearby and the staff are so friendly. I would definitely recommend Guest House Atagoya to my friends and acquiantances who want to visit Kyoto.

The place is very near (2 min walk) from Saga-arashiyama station. It is also 20 min walk to the famous Sagano Bamboo forest and Tenryu-ji Temple! The toliet and bathroom are clean. The host, Kenji was very helpful and nice and he explained to us all the good places around Kyoto. I will definitely stay here again.

We booked this guest house well in advance following the great reviews of both the property and the host/owner – Kenji. Kenji is indeed a very friendly and knowledgeable host. Upon arrival we called the Intercom and he came to check us in. He then showed us the facilities, took us to our room and spent a great deal of time helping us with travel and sightseeing tips. We were then left to arrange our stuff and shower. We were the only ones there at the time but our understanding was that there are a total of three rooms, one of which appears to neighbour the common kitchen. There is no curfew in this guest house but you need to be courteous to other guests and keep quiet, especially when using the common facilities described below. You are given a key for the main entrance and small lock&key for your room. The rooms are Japanese style with tatami and futon beds (mattresses and bedding). The room was a bit tight for our party of four (2 adults, 2 kids in their early-to-mid teens) and we found the bedding harder than what we’ve experienced in other guest houses. Nevertheless, we slept well and the AC heating kept us warm. The guest house offers a common kitchen where you can use a shared fridge, a microwave and a kettle with plenty of coffee or tea for guest use. There are two toilet rooms for guest use and the bath/shower is also common but can be locked for private use. Overall we found this property to be very clean yet basic. Kenji was also accommodating to allow us keep our luggage for a few hours post check-out so we can enjoy the local attractions and come fetch our bags before leaving for the train station. A few words about the location… After we made the reservation and further trip planning we realized that the location of this guest house in Arashiyama was a bit out of the way, particularly if one is limited in time and seeks to accomplish a lot in other parts of Kyoto. We decided to stick with our reservation and eventually made it work to our advantage in a number of ways. First, it is but a very short walk from the Saga-Arashiyama station of the Sanin line (included in the JR Pass if you happen to have one) which we used for arrival and on one day when we went to Kinkaku-ji (Golden pavilion) benefitted from being among the first in line. Secondly, Arashiyama is where you will find the popular Bamboo Grove (a.k.a Path or Forest) that can be quite crowded starting in the mid morning. Being there first thing in the morning when there are no people makes it so much nicer. From there a short walk to the river and a visit to the Monkey Park is a nice experience too. Arashiyama is a very nice place during the day but can be very quiet at night and dining options can be limited. In the morning we stumbled upon the corner coffee shop that seemed to be stuck in time. There were a few older locals there and we sipped coffee with various types of toast and my wife even had a blueberry pie. At night we enjoyed a visit to the Yakitori joint down the street for meat skewers and beer, a fun way to end the day. Overall we’d recommend Guest House Atagoya. It is not fancy but very functional and affordable particularly if your group would require two rooms elsewhere.

My college roomie and I booked a stay at the Hotel Atagoya. Unfortunately, it was during the high season and the hotel was overbooked. It turned out that a lot of folks booked and cancelled and then rebooked, which goofed up the reservation system. So, Kenji gave us 3 options: 1. cancel, 2. find a youth hostel with an available room, 3. stay at his house in the guest bedroom. We chose 3, and am glad we did! The neighborhood is very quaint and relaxing - especially after a busy day slogging around Kyoto. Restaurants close early however, so either get home before 6PM or make sure you eat dinner in the city. Kenji has great tips and advice for visiting local attractions. He is super helpful!

Cant say enough great things about the host Kenji. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable about travelling about the region from what bus or train to take. House is a little off the main street so it was very quiet.Only 3 rooms so you dont get a large crowd - 1 downstairs and 2 upstairs. It is rather tiny so if you are a big person you may find it uncomfortable. There's one shared bathroom and 2 toilets (one of which is pretty tiny). Our room was on the ground floor which can be a bit noisy as the kitchen is right outside our door. However with other considerate guests, it was quiet throughout the night. Rooms are tatami with futons. Small towels and toiletries provided. So was tea and coffee. Location was great. 2 mins from Saga Arashiyama station and close to the beauty of the area. A walk at 7 am to the bamboo forest was glorious as it was totally quiet and peaceful without the hordes of tourists that descend to the area around 10 am. Also a Lawson closeby. Wished we had stayed here longer. Highly recommend.

We stayed for six nights. The highlight of our stay was the help that Kenji provided. - to describe the many ways that he made sure that we had a good trip would literally take pages. We stayed in some pretty nice accommodation in Japan (most of it much more costly than Guest House Atagoya) however this would be the first place we returned to. Other good points to note are: The Location - so much to see with big attractions all easy walking distance. Gorgeous walks along the river and to beautiful temples off the tourist trap JR rail a short hop away. Comfortable rooms, bathroom and kitchen - all spotless.

We received helpful emails from Mr Kenji Wada and when we got to his guest house found that he was very more helpful in person. Before our stay, I had told him that we wished to take the romantic steam train which he advised would be very busy and require booking in advance. He booked the tickets for us, even sending me a picture of where our seats were positioned on the train. When we arrived, he gave us detailed maps and information about everything we would wish to see around the area including the beautiful bamboo forest which is just a 15 minute walk away. It was lovely to be able to get to the forest before the tour groups and have it to ourselves. The room was heated well and we felt at home in this little guest house. When we left Mr Kenji Wada printed out a guide for our train times to the airport without us asking him to, he was really very helpful and made our stay so easy and enjoyable. Stay here if you wish to explore the Arashiyama area more than you would on a simple day trip. It is also easy to get into town on the many trains nearby.

My mother and aunties in their 60s and 70s stayed with me at Atagoya for 2 nights. Owner Mr Kenji Wada was personal and helpful towards us, like a friend. He gave us maps on tourist spots and teach us now to go there in detail. When my aunt wished to visit shops selling pets stuff, he printed and labeled the map and brought us to where we could find a taxi easily. One of the nights when my aunties wanted to cook noodles themselves, he quickly came over to the kitchen to help boil water and showed them how to cook it well. In the end, he cooked the noodles for them and brought them chairs to make them comfortable. My aunties were very touched by his kind and gentle gestures. They said they had never been treated so well before and felt like crying. On my last day, on the way back to airport, I lost my bag in Kyoto Station. JR West managed to find it shortly but I have no time to go back Kyoto to retrieve it or I'll miss my flight. I messaged Kenji and he helped to talk to JR West and arranged the bag to be sent to his address. He is currently arranging to send the bag back to Singapore for me. I am so grateful to Kenji. He is really a dependable and trustworthy person. I would definitely recommend friends to stay at his guest house.
