Checked in yesterday and after putting bags and stuff into our room, decided to have a drink and a club sandwich before we ventured out. The club sandwich was the worst I have ever had. Not only was the bread limp, but the chicken was tough, and to top it all half of the sandwich had CHICKEN SKIN, which had to be taken out, and the overall sandwich was extremely poor quality

Hotel's Favourite
I was initially a bit skeptical about staying here upon seeing just a 4 rating on TripAdvisor. However we found the rooms to be very modern, updated and clean. The service was good and the location was excellent, right opposite the Nijo castle. The complimentary shuttle to the Kyoto train station was a big plus although make sure to get there a few minutes early as they sometimes get full.

We , 47 year old me and my two boys of 17 and 10 years respectively, stayed in this hotel last August and loved it. It is located right next to the beautiful Nijo-Castle and well connected to the underground. The hotel grounds is spacious and luxurious, the breakfast buffet was high quality and had a great variety in every section of food. We especially enjoyed the view of the hotel's own little bamboo forest and fountain just outside. The room was clean, big, beautifully wood furnished and the beds comfy. Overall it felt like this had been a 5 star hotel before it become part of the Crown Plaza chain.

Located about 10 minutes via taxi from the main train station, though there is a metro station across the street. The hotel is indeed directly across the street from Nijo castle of which our room on the 7th floor provided an excellent view. The hotel has a grand lobby, which opens up into the bar. We did not have time to check out the majority of the facilities as it was only a 2 day stay, but there is a pool and sauna as well. The hotel is older but impeccably maintained and has a classic feel to it with lots of wood used in the design throughout the hotel. The rooms were a decent size and comfortable, with the bathroom providing a very nice shower/bath hot room. I wish I had more time at the hotel and in the city in general and look forward to my next trip back.

We only stayed here one night, but it was the perfect location to explore the city’s castle from. Right across the street! Although right across the street still meant going through a variety of crosswalks to get there. The hotel had an excellent breakfast buffet, and they were OK with us bringing a plate up to the room to bring to my dozing wife. There’s also a really cool model of the castle and the hotel nearby in the hotel’s lobby. The bathroom of this hotel had carpet in it, which was kind of strange and weird, and the toilet didn’t flush very well. The beds were comfortable, and we had three singles in a row. The hotel feels a bit outdated with furnishings and carpet, but I would still stay here again. There are a few restaurant options in the neighborhood behind the hotel, but many required reservations at night. We appreciated that the hotel had a shuttle to and from the train station, even though we didn’t use it on the way to the hotel, it was used on the way back. The hotel did recognize my status with IHG, and provided a small, welcome amenity of water and a snack.

In our experience the hotel did not live up to Crowne Plaza standards compared to many different locations we have stayed. The hotel is big but definitely lacked atmosphere, not sure how many guests staying during our visit but can honestly say that each time we arrived or left the hotel we never saw more than than 5-10 people in the public areas. There are supposed to be a couple of restaurants but we never looked for them. There is a bar but during our visit it was temporarily closed. The big plus, particularly for Japan, was the size of the room, it was very big with sofa and coffee table and super king size bed and very comfortable. The bathroom was almost as big as our hotel bedroom in Tokyo! But that was it…. The room furnishings were very dated and rooms were in need of refurbishment. There was even carpet in part of the bathroom. The hotel is located opposite Kyoto Castle in a quiet areas with metro close by, but a little out of the way for down town Kyoto with its bars and restaurants, although only a couple of stops on the metro. Staff were pleasant and polite, but as with a lot of Japanese hotel staff, not overly friendly. If you want a very quiet stay then this is your hotel, but it was not for us.

The hotel is in a prime location, easily reached by public transport as well as by the shuttle service provided by the hotel. The staff are correct and ready to help. Note that there is a stream nearby for morning exercises!

Unfortunately it was our worse stay for our time in Japan. Firstly the entire hallway and roomed smelt of long over stained cigarettes. Asked to see if any other options were available even with offering to pay the excess with next to no help/ support. I can put that down to maybe a breakdown in communication perhaps…. Rooms were extremely cramped for a family of 5. With the amenities equally as small. Reasons it got some stars was because the Buffett breakfast, whilst slightly pricey, had a large selection and was tasteful and the location was very convenient. I would strongly recommend looking else where ESPECIALLY if you have small children

I write this review as an IHG member. Lovely location close to the castle with lovely views and also, fabulous little eateries within walking distance. Authentic, delicious Japanese cuisine. Shuttle to the train station is helpful. Rooms are dark and if you are an older person, the bath is really high to climb into to get to the shower or have a bath. Breakfast is of normal hotel standard but shambolic entry. You get tickets at checkin to gain entry to breakfast. You have to sit and wait outside to be let in when they are ready for you so are given a number and you wait. Five minutes day one, twenty minute wait day two. So be aware when checking out to go early for breakfast..there are queue jumpers too….they give A reason and get let in! What I do not understand is the wait time when there are lots of tables available. Would be helpful for the website to provide a map of where the shuttle leaves from. You see this at the hotel..not helpful on arrival. Not greeted as an IHG member on arrival and honestly a three star hotel. Not four.
