We have been staying at Cabinas Tropical a few times a year for over ten years. What a treat to look forward to! Two blocks from great restaurants, the Saturday morning organic market, the daily specials at the Italian gelato joint by the bus stop. We rent bikes and are at black beach morning and afternoon. Catch the bus to... More

The hotel which is run by a nice german biologist and his wife is very nice. We stayed there for 2 days and the owner helped us with planning our tours in puerto viejo and chauita. The only disadvantage was that the room was abit un-ventilated.

We stayed at Cabinas Tropical because of a recommendation. It was well worth it. Off the main road it was quiet, which was very important for us. The hotel is very well looked after. We especially recommend doing a jungle tour with the owners, Rolf and Juana. We have never seen a person equal to Juana in spotting animals. We... More

I really enjoy being so near to town (yet not on the main street), the restaurants, the buses to Cahuita and Manzanillo. We always rent bikes for easy beach access and trips to the stores. The staff is well treated - as indicated by how long they stay! Rolf and Juana are a great resource for trips near and far... More

We found this hotel almost by accident—but were lucky to do so. The staff is friendly and efficient. It is owned by a German/Costa Rican couple who also lead tours to nearby parks and reserves. They are a great duo as Rolf is a biologist who did graduate studies in Costa Rica, and Juana has observed native wildlife throughout her... More

Yes, the hotel was fine, lovely staff, room was basic ok, bathroom filthy, towel was yuk. I have back packed for years & just feel the CR in general is expensive. $45 for a basic room with aircon? cheap for CR but still too expensive. We hated PV. Dirty, felt unsafe, filthy beaches, drugs & police everywhere, horrible vibe. I... More

After several days in so-so budget hotels, Cabinas Tropical was a breath of fresh air. The rooms are minimal, but very well maintained and very clean! It's a few blocks away from the busier areas in the town, which was perfect because it was nice and quiet. Very safe too, since it is gated. The car entrance closes around 11pm,... More

No frills, just a good clean room. Also an excursion to Gandoca- Manzanillo or Cahuita with Rolf and Juana is a must.

This hotel is a gem. It's owned and run by a German wildlife biologist and his Costa Rican wife. It's a very pleasant and safe place, located just a couple blocks from the Main street in Puerto Viejo and one block from the fabulous Soda Lidia. We paid extra for a room with air conditioning, which was well worth it... More

If you want to stay directly in Puerto Viejo this is a very good option. The rooms are simple, but comfortable and spotless. They also have real hot water and great cross-ventilation, so we slept really well. Its close to everything, but the rainforest behind is always louder than the town in front. So its no problem to get to... More
