We had a chance to slip out of the St. Louis metro area and we didn't have to go far to find the perfect hideaway! The Stone House in Chester, Illinois was just the ticket for a little out of town rest and relaxation. We were right at home from the moment we arrived at the old Presbyterian church converted... We loved the Stone House--its location overlooking the river, its decor, its lovely innkeeper and tasty breakfast. It's everything one could want for a relaxing stay. I wish I lived there. And thank you, Sandra, for arranging a tour of Kaskaskia Island. I would not have thought to ask. I hope we can come back again.

What a delightful, peaceful, relaxing place! Our room was lovely (upstairs, with a great view of the Mississippi River), clean, and quite comfortable. Sandra, the on-site owner, suggested restaurants for dinner and helped us with directions. The next morning, we enjoyed coffee and conversation with Sandra and her "grand dog," Joey (he was visiting for a few days) on the... More

We stayed in the Bedouin room for one night. Chester is a sleepy town, and we found The Stone House to be a great place to spend a quiet evening away from the big city. In fact, I'd say The Stone House may be the star of Chester. Sitting on the covered front porch in the evening, watching the sun... More

we enjoyed our afternoon relaxing on the porch, amid the beautiful gardens and loved getting up to a delicious breakfast prepared by Sandra who was very gracious and helpful, and more time to relax in such a great home and property.

My wife and I went to the Stone House and had the greatest time. Sandra, the innkeeper, was a so sweet and helped us plan our days. The breakfast were awesome, fresh and gourmet. The bed was so comfortable that we slept like it was our bed from home. Everything about this place was fun, exciting and comfortable. I highly... More

Finding a B&B that calls us back is rare, and the Stone House beckons from a hilltop on the mighty Mississippi River. My husband and dear friends treated me to a two-day birthday stay at Stone House, and what a peaceful, relaxing, and pleasurable escape it was! The food was out of this world, and the first morning we enjoyed... More

Some friends and I needed a couple of days for a quiet getaway and The Stone House was exactly "what the doctor ordered"! I was initially intrigued by the history of the house----a former Presbyterian church built in 1846. But once inside, one would never suspect that it had ever been anything other than a grand private residence. I'm a... More

Peace radiates from The Stone House in Chester, Illinois, and a cool Mississippi River breeze washed over us as we walked up to the door. This bed and breakfast was a Presbyterian church built in 1846 and has been lovingly restored by innkeeper Sandra Starr. There is a patio on the main level with a wide view of the river... More

On an 8 day research trip in MO and IL, this was much the nicest place I stayed. Sandra is friendly and serves wonderful breakfasts. My room looked out over the Mississippi, and Chester is near some interesting historical sites. This sturdy house is decorated with crafts from all over the world.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Originally the First Presbyterian Church built in 1846, The Stone House sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The church was converted into a private residence after lightning struck and destroyed the bell tower in the early 1920's. The house has magnificent exposed hand-hewn ceiling beams, deep window seats and is beautifully furnished with accents of interesting decor collected from extensive travel in foreign lands. The scenic view in a quiet and quaint setting is a sure method of relaxation. ... more   less
