The Birches is a beautiful old house. It's gracious and lived in and makes you feel right at home. The owners, the Homer family, have lived here for generations and they do everthing to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The view of the ocean from my room was breathtaking. And the room! The Turret overlooks the lawn and garden... More

Run by the Homer family who welcomed us as part of their home immediately. Delicious hearty breakfasts, (try the home made apple syrup); Susi and Dick share expert travel advice- local and state wide. Rooms are spacious, very comfortable, lots of closets, and quiet. Living room has a lovely view down to the harbor. Great morning and evening discussions sharing... More

The Birches is a beautiful and intimate B&B overlooking Sommes Bay in the paradise that is Mount Desert Isle. Because the Homer Family (which counts a former president of MIT and a former president of Bethlehem Steel in its ranks) lives on site, it's like a visit with a family in a great old home. But that's part of the... More

The view and property is stellar. A short walk to the entrance of Acadia National Park. Easy to find and a great location. THe owners were more the friendly, helpful and interested in our plans for a great time. They assisted in travel, directions and making reservations. The breakfasts were awesome too, as was the "happy hour" drink offered each... More

Other reviewers have characterized the location and the ambiance of the Birches very well. I won't repeat that. I badly needed a break and wanted to return to Acadia for a few days. I was fortunate to get a booking at the last minute at the Birches with no other requirement than a bed and a desire to be "left... More

My husband and I just returned from our first trip to Southwest Harbor, Maine, and we're already planning our next trip--and our return to The Birches B&B. From the minute we approached The Birches, we felt at home. The rambling, rustic home overlooking the harbor feels just the way a beloved family summer home should feel, from the wicker chairs... The proprietor is the genuine article. He shares with you the summer home of his childhood. My wife and I found the experience all together charming. More

Surprise--we were upgraded to The Cottage. What a treat! Unbeatable view of the water, comfortable old family summer house with echoes of children's giggles, bare feet, slamming screen doors, an overall magical spot. Informative, gregarious hosts kept us entertained during the substantial breakfasts. Excellent recommendations for local eateries and activities. We were not ready to leave. More

We enjoyed our three night stay very much. More than most B&B's, you are welcomed into the family home as a friend might be. The Homer family are very nice people, heirs of a Bethlehem Steel CEO/ Chairman of the Board (whose painted portrait overlooks the dining room) and relatives of the world-class painter Winslow Homer--they are opinionated and unusual,... Picked this B-n-B sight unseen because it was off the beaten track and reasonably priced. Bar Harbor can be a zoo even in "shoulder" seasons and The Birches represented a chance to be close to Acadia National Park but far enough away from the touristo scene. Off a side-road just north of Southwest Harbor, it was a charming building nestled... More
