if its luxury you are after then this is not the place for you. The overall experience is one of adventure and relaxation at the same time. The eco-bungalows are rustic but have a simplistic charm and if you can get over the odd wiff of the compost toilets (my wife found these a bit hard to get used to),... More

After an interesting drive south from Stone Town we arrived at the Mbweni Ruins hotel, a very cool place right on the beach. A few minutes later a person from Chumbe Island arrived at the hotel and gave us a briefing on our journey to the island. There would be 4 of us on the journey. He explained that since... More

this is a true eco-resort. The aim is to keep your CO2 footprint to zero during your stay. Rain and shower water are collected, filtered and re-used. There are huge storage tanks under every hut. The Park Rangers explain all about the flora and fauna on land and in the water. The proceeds from tourism are used to fund education... More

I will start by saying that COST and VALUE are not the same thing. The cost is reasonably high (not the cheapest place you can stay in) but the value is way higher, probably by many multiples. Having stayed in expensive hotels in expensive cities around the world, I rank Chumbe Island as #1 for value (what you get for... More

As African's the venue was very expensive and so we could only afford one night. It is a fabulous island with beautiful chalets and is very special. The attention to detail in the eco chalets, with their solar panels and water catchment tanks is superb as are the views from the bed. One of the things that adds to the... More

We followed up three weeks on Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya, and Safari with a two night stay here and let me tell you, we didn't want to leave. The island is pristine. The food is quite good and fresh, and having dinner under a full moon while a warm breeze drifts off the ocean is an incomparable feeling. The bungalows are... More

I’m sure Chumbe is a bite size example of what heaven is like. What a find! Our two nights here made our trip and in fact, our year. It really is heaven on earth. Robinson Crusoe bungalow’s that are private and eco-friendly with your own little lounge – which we wanted to make more use of but unfortunately there was... More

So many destinations promote themselves as eco. But they're not, not really. Because real eco takes real, and determined and sustained, effort. These guys work hard to protect what they have and to promote it as properly eco: I challenge you to find a single plastic water bottle. As a destination it's unbeatable, a private, deserted, tropical island paradise. The... More

I have been to many tropical paradises before. I actually consider myself a beach and island "snob". Chumbe Island is a true paradise. They have figured out how do do EVERYTHING right. Every detail is well thought out. I came with my 8 year old daughter and had the most wonderful and relaxing time. It is unbelievably romantic. The way... More
