Well, a few years ago, my then-boyfriend-now-husband and I went to Kinazi Upepo and we stayed there only two nights. When we decided to go back to Zanzibar, we wanted to go back to where we'd stayed before as it had been a somewhat magical experience that we wanted to re-live. In four years, absolutely everything changed -- some of... More

If I could give it a negative rating, I would. The only saving grace to this hostel/hotel is it's rather tasty (albeit relatively expensive) restaurant and the fantastic wait staff manning it. For $45 per night (b&b rate), we were given a room adjoining a family bungalow, making it semi-private at best. Spartan is an understatement on the decor side... More

We have been there about 2 weeks ago. This place is of course cheap, but it has its obstacles, e.g. very basic bungalows with loads of mosqitos, an open roof (target for mosqitos and other insects), toilets with no water, etc. Apart from that following aspects had a very negative impact on us, that`s why we left the place after... Yum, yum. With the acquisition of a new chef who specializes in sushi and Thai food, Kinazi Upepo is certainly miles ahead of other restaurants in the area. We tried about five different dishes and they were all delicious. Can't wait to go back to try more of the menu. More

What ever you do dont book this dump. First the teception just kept my change with out saying anything and when i asked he said oh i dont have any change. The bungalows are the worse crap i ever seen. No water no electricity and full of animals. What good is it with mosqito nets when the wholes in floots... More

We are three American female volunteers who are all around 60 years old. We were looking for a three night break from responsibilities. We found it here! Please realize that we are used to no hot water, very little electricity, and puting up with whatever life throws at us including sleeping in tents at times. Because we wanted to put... More

We stayed at this resort for 2 weeks in February in a wooden bungalow right next to the beach. The interior of the bungalow was nice, the bed comfortable, and the view out of the window absolutely amazing. The bungalow has an open structure - a window net instead of glass windows and there's a gap between the walls and... More

We were told that we were getting a hot water room when we arrived we were given a stinky room with no hot water. The drain leaked and smelled like rotting crayfish. When we complained about the water management said sometimes hot sometimes cold, and tried to get us to upgrade. Eventually I put my foot down and from behind... More

The bungalows are nice (although there isn't a bathroom door.....), however, some of the staff members were ridiculous! One in particular was rude and continually laughing at us? He threw a big fuss when asking for new towels ("that towel doesn't look dirty to me", etc). Be careful that you are not followed to the hotel by someone looking to... More

I stayed in Kinazi Upepo for 5 days with a group of friends. The place is wonderful but is is poorly managed. Letting aside some minor problems, the water was often missing due to loss in the pipes. I also see rats wandering in the restaurant during the night, the same rats that eat holes in a couple of sweater... More
