Stayed at a hotel in a dismal neighborhood with inadequate ventilation and dirty bedding. The rooms had a persistent musky odor and an exodus of mosquitoes, making the overall experience less than ideal. A challenging environment for those seeking comfort and fresh air, but for the 25 USD paid for a night, what you pay for is what you really get!

We arrived late from the airport and our rooms were given away. We were offered to stay on the roof deck without blankets, towels nor breakfast. A nightmare of a night. Booking, com reimbursed us but Malindi deducted 60 dollars from the credit card for keeping us and our luggage safe. Unbelievable !!!

Do not stay here! We made a reservation with booking.com and when we arrived we were told we would have to pay $45 extra to stay in addition to the booking.com price and they didn’t even have the room we booked available. They seem to work with several different hotels in town, none of whom update their availability on their site. It seems that when you arrive if your room isn’t available they then try to ship you off to less expensive hotels in the area. We met three groups who were all staying at malindi, none of whom has reserved there but who had been ‘transferred’ their because their chosen hotel was actually full. Malindi tried to do the same to us but wanted to transfer us to a self catering apartment block which cost half the price of what we paid in booking, without any refund on our part. When we refused and asked to speak to management the receptionist became aggressive, shouting and swearing at us. We felt very unsafe and had to leave the hotel without knowing if they would refund our money or not (they did, to be fair). A truly unpleasant experience, avoid this hotel at all costs. The guests we met whilst waiting to solve our problem all told us they were unhappy- very poor breakfast, dirty, dusty and damp rooms, holes in mosquito nets, insects everywhere in the rooms. Finally we were happy they didn’t have space for us!

My comments and story are familiar if you read through the reviews of Malindi. Booked a stay at Malindi for four nights with a friend through Booking.com. We read the reviews and decided to arrive early to ensure we would be guaranteed a room since it seems they are often "overbooked." We arrived around 8:30am and of course the room was not ready (as we anticipated). So we left our bags in storage and went for coffee. We came back at 11:00am and were told that the room would be ready at 12:00pm. At 12:00pm, we were told now that there are no rooms available and we would have to stay elsewhere. The gentleman working at Malindi, David, told us he had another room available at a different guest house on the other side of stone town. We said no problem BUT we were not going to pay more. David agrees to the original price and sends us off to the other guest house location. When we arrive, we are told we need to pay $20 more per night. We refused to pay that and demanded to be taken back to Malindi. Over one hour later, they agree to take us back to Malindi. David continues to tell us there are no rooms available...as we are staring at 7 available room keys hanging on the back door. So we cave and tell them that we will pay an additional $5 / night...and what do you know...a room opens up! This place is a S C A M. They pray on vulnerable tourists knowing they will pay more because they have nowhere else to stay. There are several individuals throughout Stone Town working together including the gentleman who runs Haliki House, cab drivers, etc. There goal is to scam guests to pay more money per night. We watched them do this to 7 other couples in our 4 days there. One couple paid in cash before they were given their room key...and then David REFUSED to give them their room key or a refund. They finally got the key when they agreed to pay more money. DO NOT STAY HERE. There are very nice hostels, hotels and guest houses throughout Stone Town that are closer, have air conditioning, proper mosquito nets, and working showers.

I booked Malindi Guesthouse over Christmas and New Year 2019 via booking.com. When I arrived with my brother, I was told that our room had been given away and that there were no rooms left. Malindi Guesthouse will double book your room and will not honour your reservation. I would not recommend staying there unless you want to risk turning up in Stonetown and having to spend an hour walking around to find another hotel. I messaged the hotel owner on WhatsApp afterwards (he wasn't even at the hotel!) and he confirmed that a booking.com reservation doesn't entitle you to a room. Confirming that Malindi Guesthouse does not care about your booking or their reputation. (See conversation screenshots below) I hope Malindi Guesthouse can improve their service and stop double bookings, as the Guesthouse seemed nice and it was a good price. But even at the low price it's not worth the risk of being left without a place to stay when you arrive in Zanzibar.

Overbooked on our arrival the owner rudely without an apology sends us to another hotel where we had to pay $35 and it turns out it’s his hotel too. Then they canceled our next 5 nights we booked with them with no explanation.

So this place is awsome! First of all, the host is very helpfull! Any question and he will help you! The room is a bit basic but I got a free upgrade! I only stayed for one night but loved it the most of my whole month traveling in Tanzania so far. It is very special, never been to something like this. The public areas are nice to just sit and chill, play games or read a bit! Everything is recycled furniture. He even made a table from a tv screen. The whole Geusthouse is really big with cosy (Dutch: gezellige) areas where you can sit. The breakfast is really nice and pretty big for me! They serve it on the rooftop. I defiantly will come back again if I every need an other stay!

Very good location with a cool atmosphere and design, with a breakfast terrace with a stunning view. The young receptionist (sorry I don’t remember his name!) had been very helpful and kind, solving a misunderstanding we had with the booking and upgrading us to a bigger room! Thanks! :)
