We had an afternoon day trip to Hunting Island State Park. It was $5 per person to enter. There is a very long, rustic beach, some picnic tables, and toilets, but that’s about it at the beach. It was a cool May afternoon that we were there, and it was pretty much empty. But with the miles of beach, it’s... More

All 8 Girlscouts and parents had a great time at camp! The staff at the park were wonderful. The attendent at the camp store was very nice and helpful. Although the Racoons were into everything, at all times of the day....they were entertaining to watch! At night they would fight and make tons of horrible noises....Bring ear-plugs. Don't be so... This was a campground on my list, so when we were heading to a rally in NC from IL the end of April, I decided to go here first. Wow! We began to wish we would have booked a week or more. Absolutely stunning. We loved our site, its location, the natural environment. We had absolutely no problems with the... More

If you like nothing but nature when you camp, this is your park. We camped there 16-21 April 2012. We had campsite #s 118, 119, and 120 (three campers). These sites are located about 3 rows from the beach. You could not see or hear the ocean from these sites. There were many more sites futher back. If you want... More

The beach is stunningly beautiful, with soft sand, gentle waves, salt marsh, and partially submerged, haunting trees. Palmettos, live oaks, and pines frame the campground. But beware, even at the beginning of April, the insects are ravenous. Get the strongest bug spray you can find and bathe in it. We made the mistake of hiking to the lighthouse. The scenery... More

This is a typical SC state park. That means that the facilities are a bit old, but functional. Unlike some state parks, this one is pretty tightly packed on the ocean side (don't know about the wooded side, but we drove back there and it didn't look like a place I'd prefer to beach camp). We got a tiny little... More

My wife and I went in early April. The day was cloudy with a shower or two. This cloudy weather made for a cooler more pleasant visit. The wind was blowing and the sound of the ocean was very calming. We climbed to the top of the lighthouse and the view was marvelous.

I was very pleased with the campground. The older couple who checked us in we're very friendly and helpful. My site was ok and the grounds were clean. I was just very disappointed in the store. I found the young female worker very rude, had an air of knowing it all and short changed us. I wanted to report her... More

This is my favorite beach and campground. We go every year and love it. We always stay as close to the beach as possible in section 3. The farther back you get the mosquitos are terrible! I did that one time and never again. But if you camp in the right part its great! The bathrooms have always been clean... More

This is one of the last undisturbed barrier islands on the east coast. It is beautiful. Raccoons and deer are abundant and looking for food handouts. The fall/winter/spring seasons are the best times for less bugs. When the weather warms, sand gnats and mosquitos will eat you alive. Unfortunately, vandalism is on the rise. Two nights ago someone stole all... More
