Lake Toba is indeed veru underrated. The natural beauty surrounding the lake is definitely on par with the other natural wonders. The only downside is the lack of infrastructure and relative difficulty in reaching the lake itself (single lane hill road constantly blocked by slow moving trucks). There are many accomodation options in Lake Toba, and Taman Simalem Resort is definitely one of the best. There are 2 main areas to stay: Waterfall villa and Tongging point, and we stayed in both during our visit. The Waterfall Villa is a nature-lover's dream come true. It is quite far from the main dining and activities area, and the facilities are more basic, but the rooms are set in the mountain right next to a small waterfall, so you'll fall asleep to the natural white noise of falling water. The air is so crisp and fresh making every breath super refreshing. Tongging point on the other hand is at the main dining/activities area, and the best part of the rooms here (other than being nearer to food and stuff) is the view of the lake. The view is superb and never gets old. Breakfast is pretty basic with local fares and eggs. Don't expect an international buffet. The dinner buffet is slightly better, but most people don't come here for the food. The activities are fun and kids friendly. The kids are very much entertained throughout our stay at the resort.

Great place to hang out with family, very serene and peaceful with lots of activities for family friendly to explore. Elderly might find it a little challenging to go around but with committed family members to help, and helpful staffs, it is still possible. Our favorite is jungle trekking. Mr. Kaban and his subordinate (young man) were very inspiring. They inspire us to love nature and their passion is truly commendable. The trek is suitable for family. Yoga by Ms. Louisa is also very enjoyable, she made the kids felt comfortable. The air is really fresh and we are happy, overall.

2-night stay for 5 adults in 3 rooms Upside: (1) Views - Resort's location on a ridge overlooking Lake Toba means that more expensive room categories and public areas have unobstructed views (weather permitting) of the gorgeous lake. Worth it to pay up for lakeview rooms, but be aware that other guests can access the gardens outside the rooms on the lower floors, so curtains have to be closed for privacy. Also worth it to drive out 15 minutes (but still within resort grounds) to One Tree Hill for the views. (2) Staff - Shout out to Fitria, who was our point of contact for our reservation, and who arranged transport to/from the resort and for a day of sightseeing. She was proactive, reliable and pleasant to deal with, whether via email, WhatsApp or in person. (3) Amenities/Facilities - Despite the remote location, there was ample hot water and good water pressure in the showers. Wi-fi was decent in terms of speed and stability, both in rooms and in public areas. Note that rooms don't have fans, air-cons or heating given the cool climate year-round. Downside: (1) Unfinished - Despite the fact that the resort has been operating for several years, the upper floors of the main block are still under construction. Bizarre! This also means that there is no interior access to the restaurant and reception. Golf cart/truck/van shuttles are offered up and down the short, but steep, distance between the rooms and the reception/restaurant. This was particularly appreciated whenever it rained. However, we weren't disrupted by any renovation noise. (2) Remote location - Resort has extensive grounds, so it's a 20-30 minute drive out to places of interest (e.g. Sipiso-piso waterfall) or to town (e.g. Tongging) to eat in a restaurant. So, like us, you'll probably eat breakfast and dinner at the resort. Confirm if your rate includes breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was buffet-style, while dinner was buffet one night and steamboat/hotpot the other. None of the meals were particularly outstanding, but they did the job.

We had a great experience staying at Tongging Rooms for 3 days 2 nights with our old age parents. We especially appreciate the professional arrangement by Citra and Fitria who always make sure we are safe and enjoy the trip in Medan and Lake Toba. Also, Kaban is a great jungle guide who share his passion for nature and we take away some jungle survival knowledge throughout the journey.

Taman Simalem Resort is one of the best destinations to unwind and to enjoy the right balance of retaining creature comforts and getting up close and personal with nature. Every moment of my 5D4N @Taman Simalem Resort was certainly worth the long journey from Medan airport to the Resort. From waking up to a magnificent view of Lake Toba from the beautiful hotel room every morning to the lovely weather, hospitable staff and delicious meals, I couldn’t ask for more. Special mention to Kaban the very knowledgeable guide with a great sense of humour, Citra and Nida the front desk staff who saw to all our needs and never fail to check in on us daily. ThankU for a perfect holiday!

I had a most wonderful experience in Taman Simalem Resort. Their hospitality exceeds one’s expectations. From the moment I arrived at the resort to the moment I left everything was taken care of with so much care. Ms. Citra took personal care of our stay . She met all our requests without hesitation and was always available whenever we needed anything. Despite her busy schedule she was quick to respond to our requests. The day tours with Mr.Budi was remarkable. Ms.Peni and the rest of the staff , from the reception to the restaurant and the housekeeping were all keen on making our stay memorable. The resort is mesmerizing, its beauty is beyond any description. It’s well kept and clean. Rain or sun one can see the workers trying to maintain the resort .The rooms and its amenities are excellent. I would recommend Taman Simalem Resort with five stars to anyone. Their services are extremely outstanding. I thank Mr. Bernard , Ms. Citra , Ms.Peni and the whole team at the resort . We wish the best for them. We look forward to stay at Taman Simalem resort again!
