I thought I might bump in to Scooby, Shaggy and the rest of the gang chasing a ghost down the hall. Only to discover the ghost was 'old man travers" and he was trying to scare people away. Upon arrival the place looks completely abandoned. It has a 12 story tower and a large circle drive, all in complete disrepair... More

Staying here with a group of college students as part of a 3 week course in the state. The lobby and porch are lovely, the coastline is fun to explore. Several students saw sea turtles near the shore. The pool was clean & inviting. The students, my colleague, and I were pleasantly surprised with our rooms after reading reviews while... More

We live on the other side of the island and have never stayed over night in Hilo, We Needed to be there over the weekend so asked around and most recommendations came for the Naniloa as it was renovated recently, well it would appear the job is still going on. Our room was very nice, I appreciated the hard floors.... More

I was born and raised on the Big Island and am VERY FAMILIAR with Hilo. I know firsthand that the accommodations on that side of the Island are pretty scarce. I made the decision to stay at the Naniloa based on the information on their website that they had "renovated". Mind you, the last time I had actually stayed at... More

The hotel is conveniently located 5 minutes away from the Hilo airport, and about 20 minutes from Akaka Falls State Park. It's about 45 minutes away from Volcanoes National Park, so not ideal for night time viewing of the summit glow. The hotel itself was delightful. Located right by the ocean (there is no beach, but somewhat calm waters around... More

This hotel is in the midst of a renovation. I had asked my friend that lives there how long it was sposed to be in the renovation mode and he said that it's been like that for a long time. When I arrived, there is no bell hop, no cart that we could use. I got locked out of the... More

Hilo seems to be an expensive place for lodging, but fortunately Naniloa had decent rates. As other reviewers have said, it looks like it once had its glory days and has a long way to go to make a total comeback. They do seem to renovating bit by bit. Our room was nice. A little unusual in that it had... More

Despite the mildew on the side of the building and the rooftop moss... I was more than satisfied with the good value of the Naniloa. PROS: Very comfy beds, nice views, free parking, great kama'aina rates! CONS: Horrible looking ice machine, freezing pool, the fact they are still displaying their Thanksgiving menus in late March. Since Hilo has such limited... More

The hotel itself is in sad condition including all common and outdoor areas. The room itself was updated, comfortable, and clean. I can only imagine that it was an amazing hotel 40-50 years ago! Still a good value for the area as there weren't many choices.

You can't but think while staying at this hotel what must it have been like in it's glory days, and when were those actual glory days. Certainly not recently. We were prepared by reading TA reviews, but like many others find that no other accommodation is available in the area. The hotel looks & feels rundown, there's just no hiding... More
