I had read that Hilo could be a bit dowdy but I wasn't expecting the Hawaiin to be as scary as it was. We were "upgraded" to a suite with separate bedroom and living, so a huge space for the 2 of us. However, as soon as I opened the fridge the bug killing began. My flip flop was a...

We always stay here when visiting Hilo. Clean rooms, reasonable rates, great ocean views!! Convenient free parking and close to downtown Hilo and its awesome farmers market. We ate at the Mother's Day brunch in the hotel restaurant, and it was awesome, with a great selection of hot and cold local dishes. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
The first thing to bear in mind when staying in Hilo is that you need a room with air conditioning and good soundproofing. Don’t be misled by promises of cooling ocean breezes or ceiling fans. On a previous visit to Hilo we stayed in a beautiful guest house with a spectacular view of Hilo Bay but we slept very little...

My friend, who lived in Hawaii for 7 years told me not to expect too much in the way of lodgings on this side of the island and she was right. Despite high ratings, in my opinion this was just an average hotel at best. On the other hand, if you're on the island, you want to spend as little...

We decided to spend one night in Hilo rather than drive back to Kona directly after visiting Volcanoes National Park. Got a good rate on the Internet and booked the Hilo Hawaiian in spite of reading some unfavorable reviews on line. We were very surprised and pleased by the hotel and its setting and the room in general. The lobby...

Hilo Hawaiian is a clean, friendly lodging. It is probably the best hotel in Hilo - Hilo is not a tourist mecca - it is a very laid back - Hawaii in the 1950's feel. If you are looking for mega spas, mega jacuzzis, this is not your kind of place. IF you are looking for all that Waikiki LOST,...

I booked the junior suite, which was a very spacious two-room suite. The one room had a king bed and a queen bed with a full dresser. The living space had a couch, small dining table with four chairs, a microwave, small fridge, and an older stovetop. The mini-kitchen had its own silverware and plates. The TV was a nice...

We stayed for 1 night only, we have a great view, the staff were friendly and we slept very well. The bathrooms are pretty dated, but it was fine for a stop over and an affordable alternative.
Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is along Banyan Drive. It is one of the largest and so is used by many groups - tourist and schools. Nevertheless, it is able to provide well for the independent traveller as well. The rooms (ours was 633) are large, clean and have a wonderful good sized balcony. Note that the mynah birds create a...
