I stayed in Chesa Salis during a warm week-end of October. Nevertheless the room, n 41 under the roof, was extremely cold. After the first icy night, I asked to warm it better but, after the dinner, noyhing was changed.(16 ° celsius). Romantik Hotel Chesa Salis‘Worth a whole roll of film’ trumpeted the report on this house that dates back to the 16thC but was embellished by the patrician Salis family who bought it in 1870. ‘It’s old, it’s not practical but we love it,’ says Jürg Degiacomi, the owner of the house since 1982 together with his wife. The restaurant has a fine reputation with menus include local as well as classic French and Italian dishes. ‘We are away from the village, we don’t have a swimming-pool, so we spoil our guests with good food.’ The carved front door remains, matched by an elaborate wrought-iron gate. Off to one side is a small room for private parties that is ‘like a doll’s house, completely wood-panelled, with book-shelves, an escritoire and tiny windows’. The noble heritage of the building is witnessed today by its meter-thick walls, handsome craftsmanship, beautiful wood paneling, outstanding paintings, handsome beamed ceilings, intricate plaster etching on the exterior walls, frescoed ceilings, and colorful ceramic fireplaces. When you enter the reception area, there is an eclectic mix of old and new with handsome antiques blending with black leather sofas, and a contemporary glass counter highlighted by a modern painting. In contrast, most of the furnishings are definitely traditional in style. All of the guestrooms are lovely. Room 26 is a particularly spacious, beautiful room with large windows looking out to the garden. The most stunning room of all, #35, is tucked up under the eaves. Its white-washed paneled walls and low ceiling are exquisitely painted with antique, floral designs - like a music box. ‘If only grandma’s house had looked like this’ was our reporter’s final comment.
