We stayed at Montecristo River Lodge in April 2012 and had a great stay. There is a lot to do along the river and Montecristo provides horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, cayman night tours and boat rides to El Castillo. The lodging is rustic as expected but clean. It took us one night to figure out how the power system worked... More

This place means well, and if you like camping you will probably love it. However, I am not a huge fan of camping and definitely not a fan of not having hot water, or a fan of 100 degree weather without air conditioing. This place is fun if you like roughing it. In actuality the accomodations themselves are about 1... More

Definitely not for everyone. We are an eco lodge far away from civilization deep in the rain forest; we operate with solar power and use a diesel generator to help pump water from our well. We do have termite as well as hundred of species of insects and plants life yet to be named or discovered, maintenance of our lodge... More

We just returned from a wonderful 4 days at the Montecristo River Lodge. Our group of 8 was diverse - some fishermen, some not. There were plenty of activities for all. The fishing was fun, although not great (due to the time of the year I think). We caught a few small fish, but no tarpon. However, we also enjoyed... More

I went to Montecristo planning to stay for 4 days and 3 nights. We met Agustin Llanes and his staff and they made us feel comfortable and at home there. They were very helpfull with information about the local area and told us some great paddle trips to go on. If you are a canoeing enthusiast, love fishing and like... More

This place is something special. Run by Augustin (speaks terrific English), this lodge is nestled away down the Rio San Juan, surrounded by rain forest, a short hop by boat to the beautiful little river side town of El Castillo and make's for a great base for hiking into the Indio Maiz reserve. You can get there by flying into... More

Montecristo is the best place to stay in Rio San Juan. Agustin Llanes, owner and administrator is a wonderful person. The cabins are great, the food is phenomenal, and the kayaking trip down Rio San Juan is the most thrilling experience in Nicaragua.

As part of our 4 day Rio San Juan adventure trip to Nicaragua, my father and my girlfriend and I planned on staying a night or maybe two at the Lodge. Once we arrived, we stayed there the entire time. All the crew and are incredibly sweet dedicated to making your stay everything you could want it to be. They... More

I recently stayed at Montecristo River Lodge for five weeks as part of their new volunteer programme and felt like part of the family. I lived in a fabulous cabin with an ensuite to myself and beautiful views over one of the plantations. The food was mostly grown locally with much of it; like the fresh fruit juices were grown... I planned a trip to the San Juan River in Nicaragua to fish for tarpon for over six months, and had chosen a Lodge (whose name I won't mention) based on their elaborate web site . Just before making reservations I went on trip advisor and was shocked by the poor reviews, I called Montecristo and spoke with Agustin and... More
