Discover the highlands of Papua. The Baliem Valley Resort is a German-Indonesian project, founded in 1999 by Dr. Werner Weiglein. The Resort is situated at 1900 metres altitude, surrounded by the mighty Jayawijaya Mountains. It provides visitors with all the comforts that are possible here in the highlands. The resort includes its own 1600-hectare nature paradise. Our visitors can admire breathtaking and stunning sites of natural beauty. The resort is surrounded by a magnificent mountain landscape with rainforests, rivers, streams and lakes. In the midst of it all you'll find, tucked away, the Dani villages where the men still wear the traditional sheath, the koteka. The Baliem Valley Resort is located at the eastern edge of the Baliem Valley. Its name is derived from the second-largest high valley of Papua New Guinea. The Baliem Valley with its provincial capital of Wamena is the home of the Dani and Lani tribes. To this day it can only be reached by plane. A breathtaking and truly primordial experience for any visitor! The resort complex includes a restaurant with large observation terrace, a reception with conference building, and 15 bungalows in the traditional Dani-Honay style; all are equipped with a modern bathroom, comfortable interiors and a large sun terrace. The terrace affords stunning views of the Baliem Valley and the nearby high-altitude mountain range of Trikora. The Baliem Valley Resort offers fantastic opportunities for hikers of all abilities wishing to explore the territories of the Dani and Lani tribes. In ten varied day-trips visitors can discover the entire highland. Many of the paths lead through the traditionally cultivated gardens, vast bush and grasslands, and wonderful primary rainforests full of orchids, moss and ferns. Discover the quaint settlements of the some 300 Dani tribal people scattered across the resort grounds. The people here are friendly and helpful, and they are pleased to see visitors.
Don’t like to write this reviews, but the situation deserves it. Now reading the reviews, I can see that there are a lot of things in common with the bad reviews I am reading about the hotel. Absolutely not worth the money it costs for what you pay. The room is ok, but paying what you pay, you don’t expect the shower’s hot water is just barely enough for one person, or that there are cracked glasses on the windows, or broken doors repaired with a piece of wood that seems to have been taken from the dumping site. Not speaking about the electricity black outs. The first night, we were cold while we were sleeping inside the bed. Next day I asked them for another blanket and they said they didn’t have any more (?????? Like if it was a crappy Homestay??? In the end they could find one). The food on the mail hall was just ok. Not a lot of variety (all the nights it was the same), and the same happened with breakfast. Also, if you were not fast, the rest of the guests would eat everything and later they said they were not cooking or preparing anything else. About the activities they organized for seeing the tribes, it was also disappointing. First day they took us to a settlement that it looks like tomorrow they are going to build a McDonald’s and a Starbucks beside. That’s not their fault of course, but be aware that it’s not really authentic, as for seeing the real tribes I guess you have to walk for 3 days into the jungle. The next day, we were supposed to see more tribes, as on the planning list was to do a trekking and seeing the Dani people. But…. The Dani people are not the same as the Dani tribes. A misunderstanding that lead me without seeing the tribes I was expecting to see after 4 years of planning this trip. A misunderstanding you don’t expect after going to what is supposed to be the best hotel in the area, and the best in organizing cultural trips to see the tribes, and for the money they charge. If it would cost half the price you could expect all these inconvenients , but not the way they do it. The Dani people are Dani tribes that used to be authentic 40 years ago and now they wear hoodies and baseball caps. On top of all this, the manager just said “come again”……?????? From the other side of the world???? After planing everything for 4 years???? Not the way you expect a manager to “solve” a problem…. As I have read on other reviews, looks like they are more interested on their economical profit than anything else…

We visited the resort for three nights during a longer trip with the company of the owner to the Korowai region in the lowlands, which was a very good overall experience, for which the stay in the resort was a perfect starting phase. The location is great outside the hectic atmosphere in Baliem, which has turned into a city with motocycles etc. You can easily explore the countryside around the hotel by yourself before or after the daily excursions. You'll see plenty of nature and friendly locals, which seem to have good relations with the resort (many work there). The resort as such is full of artefacts from the Asmat region and the bungalows offer all you need (electricity, warm water, comfortable beds, good linen, since it can be cold at night in Baliem, etc.). The road leading to the hotel is in bad shape and takes a while, but the cars are good enough to reach the hotel safely - and the trip is worth is, since I found the surroundings of the hotel as good (if not better) as some of the more traditional trekking destinations in Baliem. We also did a "pig feast" near the hotel, which was an amazing experience and felt very authentic. Highly recommended! One last remark: We visited during a time of civil unrest in Papua during August and September 2019 and I was quite concerned beforehand. During the transfer to the airport in Jayapura, we saw some buildings, which had been burnt down, but NOT near the resort. To the contrary: Due to its remote location, it felt 100 % safe there. Don't be distracted from visiting the resort if you read about the political disputes surrounding Papua. The resort is not affected!…

You have very limited options in West Papua and this is probably the best resort available. However, it is largely false advertised which incorrectly sets it's guest expectations. If they would only update their web site to more accurately represent what they offer I would gladly give them more stars. We stayed there 3 days but only had running water 2 of the 3 days. While their food is not bad you can actually do much better in town for half the price. And while they advertise a bar with a signature cocktail it is just for show and they have never actually offered anything from the bar according to our guide. It's just a lie to lure in customers. This may have been a great resort 10 years ago but now is very much in need of repair. The road to get to the resort is also very much in need of repair as it takes over 30 minutes to get here from town. Having said all that you are paying for the view. This place does have very nice views and that is the single truth on their website. I guess we were glad we stayed there but clearly felt lied to and over charged. Which reminds me to say that you should check your bill as they tried to charge us double for our meals. They pretended to not understand us but fortunately we had a guide that was able to make it crystal clear that they were cheating us and they finally admitted it was a mistake on their end. Set correct expectations and they will have much happier customers.…

Our group had a fabulous time in Baliem Valley Resort. Everyone from the dining room, to the kitchen, to the drivers, to the front desk, especially Mr Madi, did their best to make sure we were looked after. The food was delicious, and the choices were superb. We had crayfish one night as a surprise. The group had a private visit to one of the villages, and Mr. Madi came along to help us. The cabins were very comfortable and the views were stunning. Some of the rooms were quite far away, but Mr. Madi made sure those who were not so mobile, had rooms closest to the reception. We enjoyed our visit in September; although it rained, it did not derail our program. Regards, KZFung

This resort is perched high on a hill, overlooking the Baliem Valley. It has commanding views that stretch for miles. It's about 40 minutes northeast of Wamena, up a bumpy road that's tough to drive. But the payoff is worth the effort. The main building / reception / restaurant is airy and spacious, suitable to large groups and small gatherings. Food is simple, tasty and in large portions. There's a "bar", but it doesn't serve alcohol, as per Papua laws. Rooms are large and comfortable. Beds are big, linens are good. The bungalows are all wood and stone, with a big veranda and great views. There's no AC, but it doesn't get hot enough to worry about. There's plenty of local bugs around, but the hotel provides anti-mosquito devices. Staff are mostly local people, all very friendly and pleasant to work with. No WiFi, no TV's. Bring your own source of entertainment. I'd most certainly stay here again.…

The most comfortable resort I ever stayed in Papua. It is placed in the strategic locations where you can see the Baliem Valley and surrounding area where the Dani or Hubula tribe live. Lovely and comfortable room with the unique Papuan design architecture. Helpful and caring service from all the staff especially from Mr. Madi, GM of this resort. Delicious breakfast and fresh fruit were served during our stay. I recommend you to stay at least 2-4 days in this places so you can more enjoy and see the surrounding area and the beauty and uniqueness of Dani's Life's.

Wamena isn't the easiest place to get to but worth it if you want to see the real West Papua and how the Dani people live. We spent four nights there and did three day trips organised by the resort. Our guide was excellent with a good knowledge of the local culture and language. We spent half a day in a local village and two days hiking. The resort is at 1900m so take it easy for the first day. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with hot water (a/c not needed). The food was good (no alcohol) and the staff very helpful. The only downside to our visit was the rough 40 minute drive from the resort to the main road.

This was an amazing place. We were greeted on our arrival by warriors with spears and bows and arrows. the reception area is filled with Asmat and Dani art objects collected by the owner. The staff and the guides went way beyond the call of duty to do everything to make this a fantastic experience. The hikes to the Dani villages and their amazing culture were just unforgettable. The road to the resort was bad, but the bungalows (honai) were located up the hill with a great view of the valley. We were at 1900 M, so hiking the first day was a bit difficult until we got acclimatized.

This property is located a short distance away from the town Wamena. But it will take a bumpy 40 minutes drive to get there. Our guide has been there before. So he advised us only stay there for two nights, meaning don't drive in and out every day. The resort is situated on a slope over looking Baliem Valley, with spectacular view in a clear day. Rooms are nice and comfortable. Easy access to forest behind the resort, where we saw Superb Bird-of-paradise. There were a number of them there by the sound of their calls. What really disappointing was the food served in the restaurant. First dinner, set meal for all guests. It was fine. Next day lunch, we ordered some fried rice from a short menu. Food they served us had a strong smell of kerosene, assume they cooked on a kerosene stove. None of us could eat. So our guide, who speaks Indonesian, complained to the waiter and manager. Next meal, nothing changed, same kerosene favored food. So we had to go back to our rooms and eat snacks. That experience left us a bad taste, literally, of this place. I understand this is remote place in West Papua. But some little things they can do to improve guests' experience. I figured the guys working there got paid next to nothing. So they just don't care. Another thing to be aware. their water source is probably from mountain streams nearby. It has some organic material so looks brownish, and has a smell. I can live with it for showers and wash. But I took my water bottle to the restaurant, got clean drinking water to boil and make tea.…
