Before I start this property review, I must say that Anakao is a hidden gem but not for every traveller and would not recommend it for families. They lack infrastructures, roads, the beaches have no palm trees or shadow places and the scarce hotels that exist are simple and not luxurious, with few amenities and restaurants with limited choices. I can say this because I had friends staying at the most boutique hotel of Anakao- Ocean Beach Lodge and I wasn't impressed at all as they suffered from the same basic issues. But this is also what probably makes Anakao such a great place to bem, because it is very undeveloped and wild enough to enjoy away from the tourist crowds. First to get here is only possible by a small speedboat (average 1 hour trip, 15€ return, 1 connection only per day usually leaving Toliara at 9.30 am and coming back the next day at 7.30am from Anakao). It might be too much fror those who get sea sick, even if the sea isn't that rough, but anyway doable. Interesting is the fact that to get o the speedboat, you need to go on a Zebu (local ox) cart and that is fun even if hard to hang on! So the 1st stop of the speedboat at Anakao is precisely the Prince Anakao, before moving on to other properties. Hotel is located just 15 minutes on foot from the local fishermen village. The reception was great, with the owner coming to welcome us to the hotel and offering us a juice, promising to help out with any tour or food. Then we were taken to our bungalow, The bungalow is spacious, with a large bed equipped with a mosquito net. There is no air conditioned, power in the bungalow is limited from 6pm to 10.30pm, water pressure is low and wi-fi is available only at the reception. This is the same for all other properties in Anakao, so I can't really rate this property as being worse but at a similar standard. What really made the difference for me was the attention given to us in terms of organizing a tour to the local island of Nosy Ve with snorkelling at a very good price in a local pirogue (25,000 ariary incl. entry fee to the island) that not even the local fishermen could match. Besides that they had no issues in recommending me local places to eat at the village even if they had to offer some very fresh catch of the day or grilled squid. And that's what I liked here - no pressure and there to help you out. And if you want great seafood for a relatively small price (20,000 to 30,000 ariary) then you should head down to the village of Anakao. The hotels aren't getting seafood as the local fishermen are not selling there on purpose in order to attract tourists. And the quality is actually really good and gives you more of a local experience. Make sure you try the "cigales de mer" over the lobster or prawns. My recommendations are Chez Clovis and Hantao (where a smal grocery is also located). In terms of excursions, Nosy Ve is a must and I would recommend Eric and his pirogue as the skipper. He is curiosly the son of the local priest (no woriies, he will not preach to yoi) and very experienced. He alspo offers picnic meals for half the price of the hotel. In summary, definitely is a place to go if you are into adventure and living it simple, not looking into any extras. And Prince Anakao is a great value for money, greatly located in a quiet place away from the village whilst still being close enough to enjoy a meal por just stroll around.…
