  "We have just returned from 3 mights at the Happy Jackal and can highly recommend this B&B. We stayed in several B&B's whilst in South Africa and this was by far the best. It's quaint and cozy in the perfect location on the river, with perfect hosts. The house was quiet, beautifully decorated and ..."had lots of character. Our hosts were quite sociable and very knowledgeable - sharing good conversation and tips during a wonderful breakfast. And they were more than happy to help us arrange day trips and activities, which was a huge help. The room (Room 4) was one of their luxury rooms and was enormous, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated with lovely views over the river. Breakfast again was a delight, cooked to order, freshly made coffee (incredible) and fresh local produce. And the best part, was the freshly made bread and home-made selection of jams!!   "If you want to feel as if you are really in Africa, stay at the DungBeetle. All the decor, and amenities, such as furniture, lamps, and bedspreads, exude the dark continent. We stayed in a suite that had an elephant head at each corner of the bed and a balcony overlooking the river. A sumptious b..."reakfast was served each morning at riverside with freshly baked breads, homemade jams, and custom orders. The dock below was handy for our boat ride down the river to the dunes, which we recommend. We were not astute enough to book the hosts for Addo Park, because we had planned to visit an elephant reserve. When Etta learned our plans, she insisted we go to our destination THROUGH Addo, and marked a map of the park so that we would not waste unnecessary time looking for the herds. If we had realized she was so very knowledgeable about the animals, and, especially, the dungbeetles, we would have skipped the reserve and gone with her. Our mistake, and our regret. " More >

  "The location of DungBeetle is perfect for exploring Addo. We went into the park twice: once with a guide from a private game reserve and once with Derek form DungBeetle River Lodge. Both days were really nice. We saw lots of animals, way more then we would have seen on our own, with our rental car. ..." Rooms were decorated in 'African style'. Although, I would never decorate my house like this, for this place it was perfect, simple, clean and it had everything we needed. The breakfast deck is super nice. We also had drinks here after a day in Addo. Breakfast is good: many jams, marmelades, fresh bread and eggs. For food, Colchester has only one option, but that was okay for us. After all the fancy restaurants on our route, we were happy to eat a burger. Etta and Derek are like a mum and dad who want you to have the best experience of the area.
