We chose Lovran over nearby Opatija for a weekend retreat during a work trip; Opatija had a slightly overblown look from what we could see on the web (and from what we subsequently saw ..."first hand, we were proven correct). Following a white-knuckle drive from Rijeka, we were pleasantly surprised to be personally greeted by the hotel owner, Tony. He has a self-confessed soft spot for Australia and Australians, having lived there for over 20 years before returning home to help re-build the new Croatia. Very nice to be greeted in this way! Car parking is something of an issue here, especially at weekends. To tell you the truth, if you can possibly cope with the local number 32 bus from Rijeka, you should consider this.
