We stayed here because the SAT tests were scheduled at Kohala High and we didn't wnat to drive over from Kona at 4:30 AM for the 7:45 check-in, so we arrived the night before. There are very few options in Hawi, this is like an old plantation hotel from th..."e 50's, with a grassy central courtyard. Although old, it is clean, in good condition, with windows that work (no AC), clean linens, small TV/DVD. And the price was right - about $130 for two adjoining rooms. Hawi closes down at 8PM except for 1 place that plays local music until about 10PM. The walls here are not sound proof but people respected that fact; we had a decent night's sleep and the girls were ready for their test in the morning. The location here is great, you can walk to several coffee shops, art shops, and the farmer's market. Having planned all our activities on the plane to Kona, we threw it away as soon as we saw the Ranch. Puakea Ranch offers a number of activities - walks around the Ranch, horse riding, morning yoga to dolphin watching.
