Don the Beachcomber bistro and bar had great food and cocktails (Mai Tai a specialty) at reasonable prices. Breakfast is a smorgasbord and caters adequately for most tastes. The hotel is located only a few minutes from the centre of Kona and many quirky little bistros. Tours can also be booked on site. The only downside was the reception staff. Although very efficient, they hardly smiled and we came away feeling as if it was a chore for them to interact with us. Despite this, we would stay there again. " More >

  "I stayed in one of the older buildings. The rooms are larger and nearer the entrance. My room was in good condition. Because the resort is on a slope it is possible to get a room on the first floor without steps to get to it. The Lanai is large and well equipped - table and chairs and a lounger. ..." It is also shady with a distant view of the sea. Having settled to reading I was delighted to find that there is a large second hand bookshop in Kona where books can be exchanged at a much lower cost that buying new ones. All the windows have insect mesh and so it is possible to leave them open and have a refreshing through draught. I found the air conditioning unnecessary even though my rental included it. My apartment did not have a bath but it did have a walk-in shower which I preferred. In my apartment the washer and dryer were state-of-the-art and thus suitable to deal with technical clothing for hiking.   "We stayed in Unit 197 (townhouse) in late April for two weeks and enjoyed it immensely. The location of the unit is great - steps away from a small beach with turtles in the morning and close to the pool. We ate every meal on the lanai and particularly enjoyed watching the sunsets during our dinners...". The complex is a short walk from a wonderful snorkeling beach and just down the hill from a shopping mall with a large grocery store (with the best home-made pumpkin and banana breads). Sandy was wonderful to work with -- very helpful and enthusiastic. Although the unit is not fancy or luxurious, it is very comfortable. There is no dining table (or dining chairs) in the unit, but this didn't bother us since we enjoyed eating on the lanai. Be sure to visit the seahorse farm (near the airport) if you go! " More >
