Oaxaca is a wonderful place to escape from the madness of El Norte. It's a city of high culture and fine restaurants, some of the best in Mexico. Among these stand Hosteria de Alcala. It has a beautiful atrium, surrounded by climbing vines. I had cream of tomato with jalapeno mousse, followed by tuna tostadas topped with poro, a garden... More

Food's okay, but overpriced for what you get. Best part is that if you get a window table you can what is going on in the Zocalo from a great vantage point. Go there for the window table, not the food.

We stopped in for lunch and were less than thrilled with the offerings and our choices. While the food did fill us up, nothing on the menu would encourage us to return.

The place is beautiful, The te is a gallery of fine art and the service is nice but the food, specially the meat couldn't be swallowed. The bread was home made and really good.

This place is in a fabulous location and, once upon a time, it was a good restaurant. It hasn't been for many, many years now. The food is bland and unimaginative. The menu is fossilized. If you want good, upscale Oaxacan food, go to the Catedral. It's much better there.

We went here this past May, and ate breakfast, obviously we wanted to drink hot chocolate ( Oaxaca has the best chocolate) so I wanted it done with lactose free milk and the waiter was like "ok no problem", I ate a rajas omelette, it was delicious, the place is super cozy, with a beautiful fountain in the middle, no... We always like the old standby, where chiles rellenos, enchiladas, chicken mole and other Oaxacan standards are invariably good. It feels much more expensive than it is. Attractive courtyard setting.

In Oaxaca, restaurants come and go so quickly. The fancy ones that were recommended were ho hum, but Alcala remains one of the best restaurants in Oaxaca. We ate here twice last week (March 2012) and had not only excellent meals both times, but really suburb serivce.... oh that waiters and service staff were still like this up in the... More
