My wife and I had dinner at El Escapulario and found it to be a very enjoyable experience and very good food. This is is not a fancy restaurant but very reasonably priced and the owner is very personable and aims to please, Definitely worth going and having lunch or dinner. David & Marsha

Stumbled upon this restaurant for dinner. A lovely woman served and cooked a delicious meal. Authentic home cooked Mexican fare in a casual, local setting. Highly recommend stopping by.

We found El Escapulario on Trip Advisor, and was it ever worth it. During our month-long stay in Oaxaca, we ate there many times as well as taking several friends to join us there. The food is delicious, plentiful and the location, a few blocks northwest of the Santo Domingo Cathedral, is most convenient. The dining experience is wonderful in... More

Ate lunch here yesterday. The quality of the food is very good so this restaurant is a great value. Highly recommend the chile rellenos, special soup with spinach and huitlacoche, and thayuda, salad on a very large taco. Service can be slow as one person is doing everything.

We stumbled across this place, and were enticed in by the full oaxacano menu and super reasonable prices, and after two visits in three days, can heartily recommend it to other travelers. The tlayuda sencillo was a delightful appetizer, and the mole coloradito and negro were both incrediby good. The chili relleno con salsa de naranja was also well worth... More

Great food! The woman was both waiting on tables and cooking in the kitchen and we never felt neglected. The food was tasty, economical and well presented. She was careful to ask us for our preferences before she went to the kitchen to cook for us.The guacamaole was the best we{ve had yet in Oaxaca with freshwarm tortilla chips. We... More

We were lucky to stumble across this gem of a restaurant without having read any reviews beforehand. El escapulario is the upstairs restaurant in an unassuming building near the corner of Quetzalcoatl and Garcia Vigil. What it lacks in atmosphere, I.e. no fancy lighting, ornate architecture, etc., it more than makes up for in the quality and tastiness of food... More

Looking back on 3 weeks in Oaxaca, this was the best meal we had. The "special" was a really good mole, with rice, salad and a beer for a price so low I am reluctant to specify it --we were sure it was a mistake (a little more than 100 pesos for two) but another night we ordered other items... If you're looking for fancy, don't come here. But if you want an excellent meal at very modest price, this is the place for you. Talk to the owner. She is not only a first-rate cook but also a very friendly and knowledgeable person.
