The food we had didn't look like any of the pictures on here, we ordered fish and chips (which my partner enjoyed) and lamb rump with bean and lentil cassoulet (which we were told by the waitress couldn't be cooked medium as its already been sliced up). The entire service was scatty, the waitress didn't seem to have no idea... More

My partner and I ate at the royal oak last night on their new menu, we had the chicken saltimbocca which was excellent and the Cajun salmon which again was excellent. Both dishes were fresh and summery looking. Service again was excellent and friendly with well kept beers. All in all a gem of a pub.

We had a 3 course meal here with wine for just over £50. Really good value & the 3 pork medley was the best belly of pork & black pudding I have ever tasted. Dining area is a nice old traditional pub setting, the staff very friendly & helpful. We were also lucky that there was live music in the... More

The Royal Oak though obviously old hasn't made the mistake of being too olde worldly with bold modern design complementing the traditional. The food was excellent and the service friendly - oil and vinegar to go with the bread for our butter hating niece was no problem. My Thai fish cake starter was chunky and very tasty but the pork... We were staying in York overnight and I knew the pub of old. Not disappointed at this visit either. I had the cod with a smooth mash and vegetables and my wife opted for the sea bass. Both were very good. We shared a trio of classic puddings, Spotted Dick, Jam Roly Poly and Treacle pudding with vanilla custard. The... More

Having seen that the Royal Oak was supposed to be one of the top ten venues in York, we ventured there for Mother's Day this year. We received a very warm welcome and the friendly barman showed us to our table and brought over our drinks. Unfortunately, after a promising start, it was down hill from there. Our table was... More

We visited this charming old inn in the 'olde' heart of York for a meal with friends. The booking for 7.30pm had been made on the telephone, on arrival we were shown to our table in the pleasantly small dining room by a very courteous young man. Service throughout was faultless. The menu was reasonably varied and the food itself... More

The restaurant was full when we arrived, but we were told it wouldn't be long for a table. Got a beer and was shown to a table in under 10mins. We had looked at the menu online beforehand and had already chosen what we wanted. While waiting to order, we overheard the waiter telling the table what they had ran... More

I recently visited the Royal Oak in York with my husband and we abolutely loved it. We booked a table for 6:30pm, and although we were a bit early we were readily taken to our table. The food was very good and the prices very reasonable. We will definitely go back!
