i went here because it's listed as one of the must try food in Hanoi. despite the price, the food is superb. the fish is fresh, grilled with fresh herb and eat with rice noodles and drizzled it with fish sauce. the restaurant itself is a humble upstairs room. but it is packed with tourist.

I come to this restaurant every time i am in Hanoi and would have come at least 5 times over the years. This restaurant is supposedly 100 years old as it is passed from one generation to another within the family. They serve only one dish - river fish marinated in turmeric and cooked in a pan. You scoop the... More

We went to this place because we got a "must try" list from another friend. The dish is good but pricey just what the other reviews said. While it is indeed oily, I still like the taste of the fish with all the leafy veggies on it and rice noodles. Definitely a must-try.

We splurged a little on this, compared to other restaurant prices in Hanoi. While a little more expensive than most, the food was quite delicious and they brought more veggies for us when we had eaten what we originally received. We started talking with those around us and the owners' son was there - a graduate student in the US... More

We came here as it was recommended by the Lonely Planet guide book but the dish is totally NOT worth it. 170,000D for some fried fish soaked in oil. The place was badly ventilated too. We checked the LP forum afterwards and they were all bad comments. I do think Lonely Planet should remove this restaurant from their guidebooks! Avoid... More

I heard somewhere it is written in one book that Cha Ca La Vong Restaurant (Grilled fish Res.) is one of ten places in the world you should come before you die. Of course I´m no going to die, but because of the fame of that restaurant, i had to visit that place right on the first day I arrived... More

This place is terrible. Taste-wise, I guess it depends on people but you need to like small pieces of fish soaked in butter. Price-wise it's a joke. Was my most expensive meal in Hanoi and by far the worst. The serving of fish we got for 3 could barely feed one person. The service is not better than the food.... More

First taste, pretty good. As you take your third mouthful, the taste got worse. Why? Because the fish was drowning in oil. You can't eat the fish with the plain noodles and fresh vege. You had to cook the vege in that oil to make it palatable. And that makes the whole dish so oily. It costs 170,000 VND. The... More

Liked it, a good local joint with an intersting "single dish" menu... Service can be a bit erratic... nonetheless popular.
