Try the traditional Egyptian sweets like Basboussa (semolina cake soaked with sugar syrup), konafa (a bit like shredded wheat, soaked in sugar syrup) and ba'alawya (filo pastry layers with pistachio or other nuts in the middle. Like I said, yum, yum!

If you like pastries-especially the kinds with nuts and honey in them-go! I was staying at a hostel nearby and the guy working there walked me over there. The place was packed, you have to elbow through to see what they have. Great selection and prices. The birds nest was delicious. I bought a variety pack that had 5 different... More

We tried several of their pastries but what really impressed us was their mango ice cream! Delicious! For 3 L.E you get 2 scoops in a cup or cone. We were so obsessed that every night... More

It has all the Egyptian delicacies, but there is a technique to getting what you want. For ready-made platters, you choose one and give it to one of the little men in a blue shirt, who will take it to the wrapping man, and will give you a receipt. Pay at the till, take your receipt back to the wrapping... More

Don't miss it, go for takeaways and the ice cream. We bought gifts from here that were much appreciated back in Toronto.
