My family had lunch at The Schoolhouse in early May. There were five of us and each ordered a different item from the menu (the daily salad, the daily pasta, the hamburger, the duck and risotto, the duck and polenta fries). The food was fresh, well prepared and nothing was left on the plates. The prices are more representative of... More

Agree with the reviews saying food bland and overpriced. Nice setting. Though not as stunning views as the Brickyard - their other place nearby which has similar menu. The gift shop tried to cheat me. The price tag on the glass pendant I liked said 80RMB but after discussion in Mandarin, which they assumed I didn't understand, the 3 sales... More

Dear Guests, This is Julie Upton-Wang, a partner of The Schoolhouse. I am sad to hear your reaction to your visit to the Schoolhouse Glass shop. We have been open for almost six years now, and this is the first complaint like yours we have ever had and we take what you have said very seriously as it is a... More

We spent the Mothers' Day weekend at Mutianyu staying at the Brickyard Eco-resort which was great. Unfortunately we took the advice there to go to the Schoolyard for a Fine Dining evening on Saturday. "I must have left my taste buds at home" was my wife's comment. I thought we must have been charged for the other table of 4... More

Dear Ian F, As a partner and owner of the Schoolhouse I'd like to thank you for the frankness of your review. We've been in business for six years and clearly we need to keep striving to provide food that is not only wholesome but also consistently perceived as excellent tasting and fairly priced by our guests from around the... Only been once with a largish group. Place gets talked about a lot in the expat community. It's where you go when you don't know where else to go. The menu is safe, there's nothing particularly Chinese about it, apart from the serving staff. the location is close to the wall but isn't that special. Disappointing.

Dear Brendan in Beijing, Despite your review I am confident we offer a sustainable tourism experience -- from efficiently repurposed school building right in a working village, to fresh homemade food sourced more than 70 per cent from our area, to 80 per cent local staff -- in a clean and peaceful garden environment with wonderful views of the Great... A great setting below the wall at Mutianyu, the owners are practicing sustainable tourism and are doing a great job, its the perfect place for lunch after a walk on the wall, The menu is varied with some western and local Chinese dishes . Considering the location they do a solid job with the food by far the best for... More

We wanted to spend a leisure afternoon outskirt last weekend and thus we ended up at Schoolhouse with its rave reviews and great location just right below Mutianyu. Had viewed its menu online the night below and with its steep prices, we went there expecting something more for lunch. Averages RMB100 per dish minus drinks, the food was average. Nothing... More

Dear Maroonleaf, I'm glad that you found the atmosphere at The Schoolhouse excellent. We've put a lot into creating that atmosphere in a remote location right under the Great Wall and our pricing needs to reflect that investment as well as our commitment to operating legally and ethically, paying fair wages year-round to all of our employees. You complain about... More

I have been to Mytianyu several times when friends visit me in Beijing. I had heard of this place many times so I decided to give it a go. We sat on the terrace upstairs which was nice. The place was a bit busy but service was quick enough. I had the club sandwich while my friend had the burger.... More

Dear Jean-Pierre D, I'm glad you liked our Western, found the service quick enough even though we were busy, and enjoyed our Great Wall view terrace. It seems you've docked us because we're not a Chinese restaurant. Our menu a la carte is downloadable on our website and is posted at the door to our courtyard. We would have been... More

The beautifully restored Schoolhouse (with lodgings) at Mutianyu (Great Wall) offers a very find restaurant/cafe. Yes, yes, the service is shaky (but everyone's trying their damndest), yes yes it is annoying to flag down a server (so find your own menu) and you hear the Chef yelling from the kitchen (which is part of the atmosphere) but so what? It... More

This restaurant in a converted school house came highly recommended by a friend who lives in Beijing. Since it's very close to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, a late lunch sounded like a great idea. The restaurant tries to cater to western tastes with a menu offering mostly western foods. The trouble is they don't do it very... More

We stayed two nights at the Brickyard Inn in Bei Gou over the Easter weekend and received the Easter brunch at the Schoolhouse at Mutianyu Great Wall. The facility is fabulous, and better than we ever imagined. Staff was helpful, friendly, and relaxed. This is the place to come when the crowds and clamor of the cities and tourist sites... More
