The Bavarian Chef who opened this restaurant many years ago is gone, as are the German-speaking waiters, but the founder's son runs this very popular spot that serves large portions of tasty dishes at reasonable prices. Among the appetizers my wife's favorite is the portobello mushroom with crab meat; mine include the red pepper soup and the Hungarian goulash. All... More

This is one of the best German restaurants I have eaten at. We never had a bad meal. In the past 10 years we had diner here more than ten times. Goulash soup is good but the cream of roasted red pepper is amazing. My favorite entree is just about every dish. Then there are the sides save room for... More

Was in the area for a birthday weekend and thought we would give this a try. As a former Army officer I spent 7 1/2 years in Germany and eaten in a great many German restaurants. On this occasion I ordered the Cordon Bleu. I was very disappointed. The breading was gritty and had no flavor. This is first Cordon... More

The waiters at the Bavarian Chef (and during our visit they were all men over 40) are consummate pros who know their cuisine and wine. The food is great (even for someone who lived in Koln). The portions are HUGE - which is surprising for a fairly expensive restaurant. Really good place overall and possibly one of the best places... More

The Mandel Schnitzel was a disappointment. I was looking forward to having a unique blend of flavors with the almonds, and Strawberry/Gin sauce but it tasted like bland meat with strawberry jam on it. With desert we went from bad to worse, with a Black Forest cake that caused me to ask twice to make sure I received what I... More

The food at the Bavarian chef is awesome. You get more than one person can eat. So then you can bring it home. My favorite is the red pepper soup with crab meat on top. If anyone comes to Charlottesville, VA or has gone to UVA, they always make a trip to the Bavarian Chef for dinner This is a... More

I took my mother to Monticello for her birthday. On the way home we were starving. Stopped in to eat here and were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere, food, service & Presentation were all amazing. We are so happy we ended up here and I would absolutely make the hour and a half drive to eat here again. Try the red... More

Truly a gem in the middle of nowhere. There is often a line-up when it opens. Despite this, we do fine just dropping in. Meals are large, sides are generous, desserts are memorable. You can get your leftovers (incl. the sides) to go. Terrific atmosphere both upstairs and downstairs. It is not a place for a quick meal.

My husband and I went to the Bavarian Chef on Sunday night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The menu selection may take some time, since you are truly tempted to order more than just one entrée - everything sounds delicious. The one MUST HAVE is their speciality - a roasted red pepper soup with lump crabmeat sprinkled on top. It's... More

If you've never tried the weiner schnizel or the purple cabbage, you definitely don't know what you are missing! Even my 8-year-old loves to eat there! We ate in January, so the weather was somewhat questionable for the almost 2-hour drive. Still, it was more than worth it! We usually get double order of the purple cabbage because of the... More
