Description: For hundreds of years in the bustling cities and fragrant harbors of Asia a favorite and familiar place to savor distinctive local dishes has been the side street beer house, or pejiu wu. Here, large mugs of beer complement emphatically fresh and tantalizing "street food" made with fresh local ingredients and regional spices that tend to be on the hotter side.

A red very dodgy looking place gave an unexpected surprise! Betelnut’s specialty is the crispy cauliflower, glazed with tribal salt and pepper. And how crispy it was! While I could have done with less oil that puddled towards the bottom of a stone bowl, the crunchy texture and earthy tones of this dish made it palatable. Not to mention the... More

A good restaurant with great service. The two of us shared a really excellent ahi tuna with apple-mustard sauce and shiso ($13.95), some fine and very tender glazed pork short ribs with garlic & thai basil ($7.95), ora king salmon skewers with bata-miso glaze, citrus-mint salad ($8.88) which was a little too heavy for my taste, and good-but-not-dazzling szechuan green... While they kept a few of the old Betelnut dishes they simply were not the same. What was an old solid standby in the neighborhood is no more I'm afraid. Judging by the lack of customers I suspect I'm not the only one disappointed with the new menu. On a positive note the drinks were good and service was fine.

Came here while walking my friend's dog and we caught a table outside. First points go to being dog-friendly. The next big points was the service. And thirdly, the beer was really cold and really good. We ordered some of the finger food appetizers. The skewers are the way to go. The chicken wings were cooked really well, but weren't... More

For many years, Betelnut could be counted on for excellent, fresh, lively tastes of Asian Fusion. Certain dishes stood out - Anchovy/peanut appetizer, smoked chilean bass, etc. etc. It never disappointed. Dishes were small, prices high, but you got what you came for. My recent visit there was good, but certainly not what it used to be. Menu is smaller,... More

My friend and I were pleasantly surprised with the food, drinks and overall vibe at Betelnut. I decided to order my first Mai-Tai in years...it was spot-on. We had the roti prata, ribs, calamari, and spring rolls. All, but especially the ribs, were delicious! Service was on par for what you'd expect in a restaurant of this caliber, that is... More

We went with a group of 5 to celebrate a birthday. They have special dishes that may be only available to a few tables a night, like the chicken baked in clay you crack open. Service was excellent.

I visited this restaurant on a short trip to San Francisco and really enjoyed the food and drinks. There is a long wait though so definitely recommend making reservations.

Recently Betelnut became one of my favorite asian-inspired places in San Francisco for lunch on a beautiful sunny day. First, the restaurant located on Union Street where I love to take a walk and do some window shopping at the art galleries and fancy boutiques without annoying tourists with cameras around (just annoying locals like me). Second, the place is... More

Heard so much about Betelnut in San Francisco, we made a special trip. You won't be disappointed. There are 3 group selections. Vegetable, Fish and Meat. Among my faves of vegetables were the green beans and wild arugula salad. Of the meat group the firecracker chicken and minced chicken cups were tasty. There are pricier selection such as ribeye steak... More
