Check luggage to different destination than original ticket

Hi,

I bought my parents an Air France ticket to Barranquilla (Colombia) to come visit me. Plans have changed however and I wanted them to arrive at Santa-Marta (Colombia) instead. I booked them a new domestic flight with Avianca Bogotá - Santa-Marta (new ticket).

==> final destination changed to Santa-Marta i/o Barranquilla

Will they be able to check luggage through to new final destination on the new ticket?

Thanks a lot,

D.

You need to clarify a few things

On the first ticket you bought, were all of those flights on the same ticket, did you buy the Bogota-Barranquila flight separately?

If all of those flights were on the same ticket, then you parents could have problems using their return flights to Paris.

If this is the case, you really need to speak with Air France and arrange for that ticket to either be rerouted to Santa Marta, or have the Barranquila flight cancelled (which you may have to pay for).

If the Air France and Aviance flights had always been booked separately, then I cannot answer whether Air France will through check your parents all the way through. They'd clear immigration in Bogota and several countries will require passengers to collect their bags before transit to a domestic flight. I don't know whether Colombia follows that line of thinking or not.

Thanks for your message. Initial flights were indeed booked within the same ticket... Why could this be a problem for the return flight?

Thanks,

If you don't fly all the flights on the original ticket, all subsequent flights on it will be cancelled.

Because, as mentioned above, you must fly all the sectors on the ticket in the order booked. The moment your parents no show for the BOG-BAQ flight, their tickets will be canceled, including the return flights.

What you need to do is contact Air France, and get those original tickets changed, either (assuming a Paris origin) CDG-BOG to allow them to take the new tickets, or to a CDG-BOG-SMR ticket. Of the two, CDG-BOG-SMR on a through ticket would be far preferable so as to avoid the risks of "connecting" on separate tickets, and it could be cheaper to change than a non stop just to BOG.

Hi

as I read the post his parents are booked to

Columbia on Air france to arrive at one airport but he then booked a domestic flight from that airport to another airport..If this is the case then his parents will have to go through immigration at first airport then recheck bags on domestic leg.

on the return flight if he bought a round trip domestic ticket then the airlines might check bags all the way through but they will need to get back to original Air France fight IMO

That's not the issue sawadeeka.

As I read it, the original ticket was CDG-BOG-BAQ and return.

What the OP has done is but a separate flight from BOG-SMR, and the parents will not use the BOG-BAQ leg,

As noted, this cannot be done as the parents would lose the return trip. All legs of a ticket must be taken in order or the subsequent legs are cancelled.

The parents MUST complete the trip as far as BAQ. They can then get a separate ticket BAQ-SMR, which ironically will take them back to BOG. But that is the only way to do it, unless the AF ticket can be changed to make SMR the final dstination.

Yep, as soon as they miss one leg, the remaining flights, inc the return is automatically cancelled. The only way it can be done is for the airline to change the initial tickets to the correct routing or buy new returns. Any change, depending on ticket terms, will likely have a cost.

So the issue is not the bags as such, it's that by missing one leg they throw away the remaining flights,

Suggest the op speaks to the airline who issued the initial tickets ASAP and explains plans have changed.
