- Intercontinental Hotel Minato

At the end of a long business tour in Asia it was marvellous to have completely professional service and a serene, sophisticated environment. Overall beautiful, dleicious food, restful tasteful rooms.
I had an opportunity to stay at this hotel again, and was fascinated even more. Room is spacious, they offer towels and bath robes in abundance without previous request, and, the whole atmosphere which is kept quiet and sophisticated. The lobby where you can enjoy buffet in the morning, is completely quiet, and I wonder how they can keep such nice customers.
It has Seven Eleven convenience store downstairs, but my recommendation is QUEENS ISETAN grocery store, which is inside Shinagawa Station, and very close from the hotel. They have variety of fine international foods including take aways, and also beverages, where you can choose wines and sparkling mineral waters as well.
I stay in hotels all over the world and am very picky about things such as cleanliness, noise, and room temperature.
I have to say that the Strings is fantastic.
A bit of background -- our business team was walked here from the ANA Intercontinental in Tokyo because of planned construction at the ANA. This was our first experience at the Strings. Our company isn't known for shelling out money for the very best rooms, so I think our rooms here were typical. In other words, we weren't in the penthouse suites. But from the very first, we were made to feel that this hotel existed only for our every need and request and that we were VIP guests.
The staff was extremely attentive. Our first personal contact was with a manager, Mr. Ben Johnson, who was enormously welcoming and helpful. What a great first impression he gave us!
Every one from the maids to the front desk staff were totally focused on customer service.
Check-in is on the 26th floor; our rooms were on the 29th. Because I travel so much and am a terrible sleeper, I'm very zealous about making sure my room will be quiet and comfortable the moment I walk in. My room was so quiet I thought the entire floor was empty. The room overlooked the busy shopping are and train station below --- and it was still tomb-like. The bed and pillows were the best I've ever encountered. The TV is a beautiful 40" Sony Bravia -- better than my kit at home! I used the wired internet connection, which was blazing fast.
And the heated toilet seats -- pure bliss!
It was very handy having the 24-hour 7-11 on the first floor -- since we're all jet-lagged, we hit the store at about 0300 for snacks. The prices for the rice balls, dumplings, and noodles were quite reasonable.
There are a ton of noodle shops within a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The concierge was eager to recommend various restaurants for us.
I will be recommending that my company use the Strings in the future if possible.
What a wonderful experience - thanks!
This really might be 2 reviews as we stayed here on 2 separate occasions and had very different experiences, one great and one not great. On the good side, the hotel is very convenient to transportation and is easy to get to from Narita. Since it is near one of the main JR Shinkasen stations, it is a convenient hub for travel outside of Tokyo. The train station is also a hub for the many many rail lines in Tokyo. The hotel is beautiful and elegant with relatively spacious rooms (by Japanese standards). The bathroom is lovely. We booked a king bed and the first room in which we stayed was great. The staff was also very helpful. On our second visit, we checked in at 4 and were told we needed to wait for our room. When we got to the room, it was considerably smaller than our last room and the bed looked small. We went to the front desk and asked about it and were told that we had booked a king room, not a king bed, and that the beds in the king rooms could vary in width by 20 cm because of the outside dimensions of the building. I stay at Intercontinental properties a lot, and it would have been nice to have disclosed this information beforehand. I complained and we were moved to a larger room after a several hour wait (which impacted our evening plans quite a bit), but the staff were unhelpful and seemed very put out by our request. This was in such contrast to our first stay. This is an expensive hotel and I really don't like feeling unwelcome, which my family and I did. Furthermore, we were duly warned at booking that there was a 7000 yen surcharge for a second person in the room (my wife), and this might be common in Tokyo, but it is rather ridiculous to basically charge per person for a room where there is no significant material difference between having 1 or 2 people in a room (extra water)?
I live in Switzerland and Japan makes Switzerland look inexpensive! The Intercontinental is a nice, clean hotel with all that you would expect from a Japanese location. Comfortable bed in a smallish room. Great shower and bath and automatic toilets with heated seats and water spray.
I found the staff to be indifferent and although the food and beverage was good, they did try and turn us away one evening even though we were guests of the hotel. Prices for food and drink were beyond ridiculous which brought the rating of the hotel down.
The gym was small but equipped ok, I would guess it gets very crowded in the AM with only two treadmills, but when I went it was completely deserted.
The people of Japan seemed sad to me, lots of masks to stop colds, little smiling and after two weeks in Asia I found it to be the least friendly of my Asian stops.
