My husband and I spent three nights at Hotel da Luca in July 2010. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our room was spacious and spotless. The A/C worked although we didn't really need it because the outside temperature was comfortable.
Carlota and Eduardo were very helpful offering us tips on what to visit and how to get there. They even printed the train schedules to Florence. They were also very friendly and we really enjoyed talkin to them. They happily responded to any questions we asked.
The hotel is conveniently located just outside Lucca. We visited Lucca, Volterra and Florence. We never made it to Pisa because it was raining really hard on the one day we were going to Pisa.
You absolutely need a GPS if you're going to be driving in Italy. Maps just don't cut it; you'll end up lost.
The hotel restaurant was very good. We ended up eating in the restaurant all three nights. We never even asked for a menu; we simply asked our waitress what she suggested and we were never disappointed. Be sure to try the tagliatelle with tomato sauce. The presentation alone is unbelievable: flambéed parmesan cheese which gets scraped down (in the Parmesan cheese wheel) and added to the pasta. Very tasty. The antipasto buffet was delicious. There was a good variety of vegetables, prosciutto and fish. Monday nights are fish/seafood night. We enjoyed a seafood ravioli and spaghetti with seafood; both were excellent. A complete meal including Prosecco, antipasto, bread, pasta, wine and dessert came to 55 euros for two. We thought that was reasonable, given that the quality was excellent. Our waitress, Loredana, went out of her way to accommodate us. She even gave us a table away from the smokers.
Breakfast was simple, but tasty. The croissants were wonderful! The coffee was also great, which is what you expect in Italy.
All in all, it was a great experience. We wish we would've booked a fourth night. Maybe next time.
