“Gorgeous hotel with lousy service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

We were upgraded to this hotel...and indeed upon arrival we were taken by the well designed spacious room and beautiful bathroom. The room even had a small balcony. We were given a code to enter the hotel...and that was a good thing because the next two days we never saw another soul in the hotel. The owner said if we were going to stay for dinner...we should make a reservation right away. so we did. Dinner was more or less a lunch...a bit of a deception...no choice,... the same salad, ragout with rice and an entire bottle of the local wine for everybody...though the taste was good...it was way too expensive for what it was and the portions were barely adequate.
We were unpleasantly grounded being too early for breakfast the next day, though we were at the time appointed. The lady made it up by preparing eggs and bacon. Returning in the the afternoon we found the room uncleaned and the beds were not made. It was clear that nobody had been in there. We tried to make a dinner reservation...but no luck there either..... there simply was nobody. A few hours later we finally caught the owner on her way up to her own apartment. When we said we would like to reserve for dinner she answered that tonight there was no dinner and she gave us the address of Restaurant Rhodas. Conclusion...a room can be beautiful but if the service is this lousy and unfriendly. a hotel is not a hotel anymore.

I want to thank you to let us know your experience at our hotel, I honestly appreciated your time and I am terribly sorry that you had this experience in the hotel. Let me please tell a couple of things to make understand what happen. First of all, the hotel has only 8 rooms and we are not always at the reception because it is not necessary. You had bell, telephone at the room and we live at the hotel in case of anything.

On the other hand, in relation to the dinner I understand that you perhaps weren’t sure about dining or not at the hotel but we cook only for our clients so we need to know in advance that you come. It was not as you say “make the reservation right now” because we always advise the clients to tell us some hours before in order to buy and to organise ourselves.

What you call ragout was a tipical local dish made by my mother that takes a lot of time to cook it and it contains squid and different mushrooms. What you call “the same salad” was a salad with goat cheese, walnuts, sesame seeds among other ingredients. I am sorry that you feel desattended at the hotel but the food has nothing to do with our small reception.

About the room not cleaned, it was a mistake of us and you have to excuse us because it was really a big lapsus.

Finally, I am again sorry for your conclusion because we make always the effort in order our clients feel well in a familiar atmosphere and although I don’t doubt of how you feel, you can see by all the other comments about the hotel that your sensation was not shared by the majority of our clients.

“Perefct stay with a baby”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2010

We did not actually stay here but in the same building at the hotel Niui del Sol. We arrived after a long hot journey from London via Barcelona, and felt immediately relaxed and refreshed.

Beautiful rooms, great food, very friendly management, fanatastic old villiage away from the hustle of the nearby Roses.

We wanted to have dinner in our room so we could babysit our child on the first night and the management went out of their way to make sure this happened.

“Excellent experience!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2008

Wonderful week!!
My family and I (my parents, my wife and my 1 month daughter) spent a week in this charming and very well located hotel and we definetely recommend it.
The hotel is located in a small village called Palau Saverdera which is both quiet and convenient given that it is just 5 km away from the beaches and just 15-30 minutes car distance of the main tourist attractions of the beautiful region of "Alt Empordà": Roses, Figueres (where you can find the Dali's Museum), Cadaqués (probably the most beautiful mediterranean village), Port de la Selva, Perelada...So this hotel is a very good choice if you want to explore the Empordà region without driving long distances and find a quiet and relaxing atmosphere when you are back at the hotel and find your charming and big room to enjoy a well deserved rest.
Mercè, the owner of the hotel (and fluent spanish, catalan, french, german and english speaker) is a very good and gentle host always willing to make you feel at your own home, offering you very complete breakfasts (with excellent catalan sausages and home made cakes!), and sharing with you all her best suggestions in order to optimize your stay.
I personally recommend you to experience Merce's dinners since they are very representative of the region's cuisine and they are a very good value option. The only drawback is that there is a fixed dinner menu, without options, although Mercè can cook different food for you if you don't like something and tell her in advance.
