“a great place to be comfortable and make a contribution”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2010

I just spent 2 weeks at TOLC in one of the B&B rooms, the first week on my own and the second with my husband. I loved it and would return in a heartbeat. I agree with all of the glowing reviews below - warm, comfortable, friendly. Gary, the owner is wonderful and I enjoyed many interesting conversations over the tasty home made granola and yogurt breakfasts. The people who work there couldn't be sweeter and I felt well cared for. It feels like staying in a community. It's true that you have to understand where you will be living, and that the B&B rooms open into the garden used by the students, with the hammocks, chairs and tables often full of young people, chatting, studying, resting, playing. For me that's part of its charm. I was studying Spanish and this provided opportunities for practice, for an intercambio with a young woman at the centre and a way to get a glimpse into lives I otherwise would not have access to. Stay there. Make a donation. Check out the wish list and bring them things. It's a really worthwhile place.

“comfort, privacy, benefits everyone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2010

We stayed in the apartment above the Oaxaca Learning Center for 9 weeks. You can find out more about the center on the website. We initially decided to stay there because we were impressed with the mission statement however, we did not anticipate how much we would enjoy the apartment. We loved coming back to our apartment after a day in or ouside of Oaxaca. We loved the rooftop, the aroma of the flowers and the complete privacy that it provided. We also enjoyed entering the learning center, greeting the young people who attend the center, and just absorbing the positive atmosphere of the center. Both of us were able to participate in intercambios with the students. We also liked meeting the other guests in the B and B, on the first floor. The fountain and the hammocks in the patio provided a place to recharge our batteries. Gary Titus, the founder of the center helped us figure out where to go and how to get there. All in all, we are happy that our US dollars went to support such a great cause.

“Great place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2010

This is a charminng B&B a few blocks from the zocala and the center of Oaxacan activity. For two non-Spanish speaking, independent travelers, it was a real oasis. Gary, our host , is a transplanted American who has spent 18 years in Mexico. He welcomed us warmly and was helpful with suggestions and ideas for things to see and do.
Our room was one of two opening onto a lovely courtyard. It was small but spotlessly clean with comfortable beds. Our private bathroom had an ample supply of hot water, something that we didn't find everywhere.
Gary founded Learning Center (TOLC) many years ago as a place for students from the local schools to come for tutoring and educational opportunities. It is supported by the rents of the two B&B rooms and an upstairs apartment. Students often study in the courtyard giving the place a feeling of community.
Breakfast each morning was served a sunny space overlooking a small garden. We enjoyed fresh fruit, homemade granola, and yogurt along with real coffee. No Nescafe here.
The location is great, any place that we wanted to visit, the zocala, museums, craft shops or excellent restaurants were just a short walk away. We only left after five days because the room had been booked ahead by someone else.

“Stay in the Apartment!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2010

I agree with the traveler who stated that you need to understand what you are reserving with the B&B rooms. If you are use to a hostel or a simple room for a short stay then these rooms might work for you. But, for longer stays, you might want more privacy and quiet that the roof top apartment offers. With the B&B, there are up to 20 students occupying the area right outside the rooms. The rooms are small with no window or a chair. The only natural light comes from the glass in the door. However, if you open the curtain on the door you often have students sitting 1 to 3 feet away looking in to your room or talking and studying with others. The chairs or hammocks on the patio are normally occupied from 9 am till 7 pm so there is really no place to sit and relax… other than the bed in the room. On the positive side, the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, the young staff is polite and friendly, breakfasts are good and the work being done by the Learning Center is very admirable. Support the cause and reserve the roof top apartment for more space , a lovely patio and privacy .

“We Stayed in the Apartment Upstairs....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2009

Spent a month in the apartment (no B&B services) above the school. The apartment is about 400 sq ft in size. It feels much larger as one wall is all windows looking out onto a rooftop garden---I felt very safe here. It's about a 15 minute walk to the Zocalo but was midway between there and the Spanish school I attended so a great location for my needs. Housekeeping once/week and use of the washing machine was nice.
This apartment is surrounded by schools. The one downstairs, and flanked by others so it's a busy street. On top of that there's the usual dogs barking, fireworks going off, chickens crowing and street traffic. I'd stay here again, but would bring an ipod or some source for music along with earplugs to help drown out the outside activity. The apartment is open to the elements so gets all the city noise that the B&B rooms do not get...but the apartment also has more privacy.
Enjoyed listening to all the kids laughing downstairs. I consider myself to be pretty self sufficient, but Gary who operates this school, along with his staff, were most accommodating when I needed any assistance.
