“NIce hotel, unexpected "in-house movies" on bill”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Stayed in this hotel December 2011 for a wedding. The hotel room was very nice and clean. The hotel lounge was nice also.

In getting ready for the wedding, we wanted to listen to some music. There was a clock-radio in the room, but I remember it being very confusing to operate (and I have a masters degree in a technical field). I think it had think it had preset stations that couldn't be changed.

Anyways we tried to find a music station on the TV and I think we accidentally selected one that is pay-service. We then quickly turned it off because (obviously) we didn't want to pay for something like music.

Unfortunately the next day when we checked out, we saw a charge of 14.99 for "in-house movies" on the bill. We didn't watch a movie, so this must have been for the music (since when does music cost 14.99?). When we complained, the receptionist rudely said nothing could be done because the TV services were provided through a third-party. We had no choice but to pay for something that we didn't want at all and didn't use at all. So much for customer service.

To make things worse, we were charged two full days of parking ($17 per day, $34 total), even though we only parked less than 24 hours (checked in at 3:00pm on saturday and checked out at 12:00 mid-day sunday).

I've read other reviews on the hotel mini-bar. Overall I guess if you want to stay at this hotel, expect to be charged for **everything** in excess of the room itself. And don't expect hotel staff to be compassionate about any complaints to the charges.

Thanks for the review. We use a great system that is in many hotels to offer movies and "bespoke" music.. you can choose the genre, etc. As a failsafe, there is a final screen that asks you to confirm your choice and that you will be charged. Once confirmed, your selection is added to your account. However I do think that our front desk team need to ensure you know how and why you have been charged, we need to work on our message.
Thanks for sharing your feedback, regards, Michael.

“Ripping me Off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Terrible Experience
My friends and I stayed at the Novotel for New Years and thought all was well until I got home and received a charge on my visa bill for $100 that shouldn't be there. I called to complain thinking maybe there was a mistake and was told by the lady on the phone that it was a charge for the minibar. The minibar is sensor sensitive and if anything had been moved it would be recorded. Having not touched anything I asked to have them check their restock records so that they could see nothing had been taken whatsoever. I received a call the next day telling me that my friends and I had drank beer, wine, vodka and various other drinks. Which was 100% incorrect. They are trying to rip me off because I am a young adult. I will never stay with Novotel again, and tell everyone about my terrible experience.

Thanks for the review, please let me say we welcome ALL ages to the hotel, being a young adult does not affect the service and hospitality you receive. You are correct about the minibars, they are controlled by a sensor under each beverage, take one off the sensor and it is auto charged to your account. We maintain them regularly to ensure guest invoice accuracy.
Regards, Michael.

“Midtown Toronto”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We had just moved out of another hotel due to the noise and cleanliness of a US based hotel chain to our disappointment.
Novotel let us go up to one of the rooms to check it out before booking. When they heard that a senior was with us, they found a room with handicap access. Pros: staff is very professional and helpful, CLEAN room, reasonable rate (AAA discount), parking come&go as you need, situated in an office complex which has access to local shops (coffee shops, library, nail salon, clothing stores) and underground access to the subway and across the street to a major grocery store, Staples, salon, etc.
Cons: Room was small but cleanliness makes up for it, TV access is complicated since you can use the internet through the TV, Internet access is good once you figure out how to connect
Other: has a gym etc. but no time to use it
YES we will definitely go back.

Thanks for taking the time to post a review, always nice to hear you came to us from a competitor.
I have to admit internet access thru the television is a little confusing and not as fast as our complimentary wifi... I opened up more bandwidth last week, so even quicker now.
Look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel.
Regards, Michael.

“Good Staff and Service, Big issues with Wifi”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Beautiful hotel, perfect location for the business I needed to complete and staff was accommodating.
Wifi was an issue, they have problems through out the building. They even provided wifi signal boosters which in my case did not improve the situation.
Unfortunately the rooms are not hardwired, so I ended up using the lobby computer much of my staff.
The staff accommodated me financially for this issue and were extremely helpful.
The room service and food was very good, would highly recommend the restaurant on main level.

Thanks for your review, however noticed you stayed way back, last August. So just wanted to confirm that the wifi is now super fast.... all upgraded thru fibre in the past couple of months and also increased amount of bandwidth per user!! Please come back and try us again.

“Value for money, great for Toronto Centre for the Arts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

This was a basic 3.5-4 start hotel. It was clean, comfortable, reasonably priced and we would stay here again if we were planning to see a show at the Arts Centre again. Don't stay if you are looking for super-luxury, but for the price it was worth it and we liked the king-sized bed. The restaurant, Trio, was a gem in the neighborhood. We hadn't expected much because it's a hotel restaurant and it was empty when we arrived. But the food was amazing! We'd definitely eat there again.
