“Better experience than expected!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

I just returned from a visit to Montreal and had heard some questionable things about the Hotel Universel. I read the reviews on the website and heard about the tip to ask for a renovated room. Upon arrival I asked the girl at the front desk if I could have one of the newly renovated rooms on the 6th floor. She was so polite and friendly and told me it would not be a problem and gladly switched my room. The beds are a little hard, but again, I own a memory foam/sleep number bed so any hotel bed is hard to me. All I can say is the staff at the hotel is EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. The wait staff were quick with a smile and very courteous. Plus, they were accommodating by switching over to English once they discovered my French is just awful. Overall it was a very pleasant experience and I would gladly stay there again.,

Room Tip: Ask for a newly renovated room on 6th floor

“True Lies”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

This hotel presents itself so differently from their website and their brochure- very decieving- with its well presented pics in the website and the brocure . As soon as we arrived at the hotel- there were 3 buldozers in front of the hotel- and a full construction site next to its entrance- a very welcoming site in-deed.We arrived at the hotel 3 hrs before check-in time and were allowed to check when we got in at the reception -thanks to the nice front desk staff who was kind and accomodating (he needs to be promoted- we forgot his name - he's the one with the four missing front teeth) He tried his best to provide us with a not so clear instructions - and up being lost just inside this hotel.Corridors were dark and looks like hospital corridors . Rooms are fairly clean- some of the bed sheets have stains on them - curtains are dusty , toilet is clean - toilet paper is the cheapest of its kind- it melts as soon as your hand touches them. The view from the room was the awe-inspiring Green Pool- green because the water was so murky and dirty even crocodiles would not dare to swim. We slept well- simply because were so tired and exhausted and forgotten about thinking how uncomfortable the sheets/bed were. One good thing about this so called hotel is its location- stone throw away from must-see sites . Overall universel montreal should not be called a hotel by international standards . And for those travellers with not much expectation from a hotel- this is one is for you.

“Good business hotel for the east side of Montreal”

Enjoyed 2 nights last week while on business in Montreal East. Good access off Sherbrooke St. Est and several decent restaurants located within 10 minute walk. Hotel restaurant good quality but typically over priced for convenience. Stayed in room on 6th floor which has been renovated to a Euro style recently. Enjoyed an amazing sunrise to the east in the morning !

Room Tip: Ask for a newly renovated room (higher floors)

“great location - would stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

Stayed here because of its proximity to the Biodome + the free shuttle to same.

Check in was drawn out - but as it turned out it was because the first guy we dealt with was a moron. The 2nd, and rest of the staff was dealt with were smarter and more professional (in fact we were even able to get discounted passes to the bio-dome thanks to one attendent). Once we had our room, we had to re-order our cot again (blame again goes to the moron). The 2nd attendent was very helpful.

We toured the hotel and used the pool a little dated but OK. We did find the hotel dated looking but it was very clean and the staff (minus moron) were VERY polite, friendly and helpful.

Restaurant was nice, food good + good wine.
Parking was free and shuttle service prompt to/from Biodome.

I was nervous about staying here due to the review about bedbugs, but we had no issues (but yes, we checked anyway to make sure). My husband wanted to stay here because he felt that if management had to deal with it once they would not want it to occur again and would stay on top of it. Not sure if his reasoning was sound, but we had no issues and the hotel was VERY busy.

Cool views, too!

“Pleasant stay...will definitely return”

We were 2 families with young children. Friends of ours had been at Hotel Universel Montreal a couple of months prior for a swimming competition and recommended it. We were very happy with our stay. Hotel location was great as we expected, on Sherbrooke street just 4 – 4 ½ miles to downtown. We were there to visit the close by attractions, Biodome, Botanical Garden and Saputo Soccer stadium (great soccer game). The hotel was full for the weekend but staff was calm and welcoming. They have renovated the 6th floor but for the moment the rooms have 1 king bed in them so we we opted for a standard room with 2 double beds on the 4th floor, although the decor was not of latest trend, all was functional and we were comfortable. We payed 129$ per night and considering parking was included, this is a good deal. The free shuttle was quite convenient and we took advantage of it all three days. This saved us lots of headaches and money as we parked for free and used the subway to get around. Breakfast was excellent each morning with lots of variety and by taking it at check in we saved 15% of the regular price. The outdoor Pool was clean and with the kids, came in handy, even if for just an hour. Would recommend to anyone as they are equipped for most travelling needs. Mr. Savuth, thanks for your particular attention and recommendations. Hope to see you soon.
