“Cannot understand how it's a 3 star hotel... should be a 2 star at most”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2010

Arrived at the hotel, quick check-in. Went up to the room, and as always, did the bed-bug test, and for the first time ever, got a strong indication of infestation of bed-bugs. (For those who do not know - get rid of the bedcovers all the way tot he mattress, and check for blood residues in or around the piping of the mattress. If you see red or black 'dots' - you have bed-bugs)
Went down to the reception and told them that the room had bed-bugs. The 2 staff present were not surprised at the least, and offered to change the room. I accepted and was moved 10 rooms over.
The bed was not very comfortable, though I was told it was 2-3 years old. They have a brochure about whether or not you want the linien changed, I hanged the notice in the way instructed to the chambermaid to change them, but same linen was left in the room. They have glasses in the room, and I awsked her how they wash the glasses. I was told that they "sterilize' the glasses with the hot water from the faucet and they use the towel to dry them......
The food in their restaurant was not very appetizing.
Will never return.

Nicita E, Director of Sales at Hotel Universel Montreal, responded to this review
13 July 2011
Dear CUITLAHUAC,

Thanks for taking the time to post your opinion. It is my pleasure to reassure you, and lay to rest fears that you or our future guests may have. I verified the reports documented from Housekeeping and Front Office.

CONCERNING THE 1ST MATTRESS

The lining you referred to, was no more than stitching directly from the manufacturer. I agree that with the bed bug concerns globally, they could've used a lighter coloured thread instead of the burgundy coloured one? I guess the manufacturers did not expect this slight imperfection to cause the type of misunderstanding

*** Please review below, our detailed plan of action established in order to prevent (daily) ***

Currently, the room attendants notify their immediate supervisors when they have a doubt.
1. At each change of bed linen, attendants check for the presence of small spots of blood. If so, they communicate immediately with one of the maintenance supervisors household.
2. Upon arrival in the room, the supervisor inspects the sheets, the mattress and the bed in search of any trace (bugs, defecation ...). If the supervisor does find any trace of one or the other, it communicates with the maintenance manager.
3. The maintenance manager inspects meanwhile, headboards, bed bases and edge of carpet along the wall behind the bed.
4. At the first sign of activity, the room is quarantined and an appointment with a exterminator is taken in as soon as possible (usually the same day or the day).
5. The exterminator inspects the room and treats only if there is confirmation or trace
of bed bugs (preventive treatments are unfortunately of no use).
When the room is treated, it is unusable for a period of seven days so that the products work.
6. The destroyer also inspects two rooms adjacent to that which was treated or some rooms where the host went to make sure there is no transfer.
7. Subsequently, a thorough cleaning is done by the room attendant, and this, in all corners. Bedding is, meanwhile, cleaned separately from other laundry cleaned in the laundry room and is put in the dryer for a period of 60 minutes at high intensity (within proper regulation) to fully destroy the bugs (the heat kills the bugs, if any remain).
Travelers are advised to lay down their suitcases or bags on the luggage rack or on the desktop. Also, it is advisable to leave the clothes inside the suitcase and maintained closed by the zipper. Remove the least clothes on beds or on sofas to protect your transfer.
However, if the traveler is worried about bringing back bed bugs with you , something easy once at home is to put everything in the dryer at high temperature for a period of 60 minutes to kill potential bugs.
It is sometimes very difficult to detect the presence of such intruders since at the beginning, The bug color is transparent. It takes a reddish color, almost black, the more it feeds. It can live very long without feeding.
Note that if the situation became out of control (epidemic - which is not the case now), the procedures would be revised in consequence.
The presence of bed bugs does not mean that the premises are unclean or unhealthy.

CONCERNING THE 2nd LESS COMFORTABLE MATTRESS

In the second room you were transferred to, thank you for stating this as it had lost 33% of its original comfort, so it was changed, along with the 12 other (less than comfortable ones) of our 230 rooms in December 2010.

CONCERNING EMPLOYEES LACK OF REACTION

Management proceeded after the summer of 2010 in making certain necessary reassignment to appropriate departments to bette rsuit to customer and the hotel needs

CONCERNING THE CHANGE OF LINEN BROCHURE

We do take this very seriously and this system has been implemented for several years. This is greatly used by customers, but unfortunately the chamber maids records indicated that the brochure was left at the same location in the room from prior to the check in.

CONCERNING THE DRINKING GLASSES

We can assure you and all customers that our drinking glasses are washed well within the norm of the industry’s recommendations
The chamber maid must of become nervous, thus not specifying that a special cloth for each and every room is used and not any used towel... and saying sterilized. Both glass and plastic cups are available.

CONCERNING THE RESTAURANT FOOD

I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the meal. We get very positive feedback for our restaurant high quality food but realize that we cannot (as much as we’d love to) please everyone. I can assure you that had anything been brought to the attention of the Manager on duty, you would have been heard through and taken care of.

Thanks once again for the comments and hope you will consider us for your future stay in Montreal. I am at your disposal for any extra information you may require.

Best regards,
E Nicita (Director of Sales)

“GOOD DRIVING STOPOVER IN MONTREAL”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2010

Hotel Auberge is located just next to the Botanical Garden and Olympic Stadium. Great photoshots can be had at this location. It is also near the Metro Station Vial that is about 10 mins walk. With free parking provided, one can hop onto the trains to the city without having to contend with parking problems there. Nearby the hotel is Place Versailles which is a big shopping mall. It is 5 mins away by car but hotel shuttle can bring you there anytime on request. Don't forget to tip the driver for this. Based on my internet search, I reckon there are only two hotels in Montreal that provide free parking - the other one is way out of the city with no nearby Metro station. The other freebie is the internet access in your rooms.

The front desk is helpful and speaks good English. We were allocated a room 2 hours of check in time. A great relief after a long drive.

For hotel stay I have a few quibbles: there is no soap receptacles in the standing shower - one has to place shampoo and soap bottles on the floor or edge of the shower basin. The extra bed provided sagged badly at the centre and this is bad for the back. Laying the mattress on the floor is the best course of action.

Although it was great to have free parking, I discovered to my horror a nail stuck deliberately on my car tire just before I was about to move off. Having only picked up the car at Toronto and then making two brief stops before arriving at the hotel, I cannot but conclude that it took place at hotel confines. The security called to investigate cannot do much. Lesson learnt - park your car infront of the hotel. I parked at the side of the hotel as my room was there and overlook the my parked car. But what's the use? Some wild parties the night before could have done the damage. Well, small inconvenience, as Avis replaced me another car at the Montreal Airport.

Barring the prank on the car, the hotel stay is quite pleasant.

“I like this hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2010
1
person found this review helpful

I was at this hotel for 2 nights at Easter time to visit family and relatives in Montreal area. I was there with my 2 teenagers (12 and 14 years old) and my wife. It wasn’t my first visit at this hotel; I have been there few years ago, when Montreal had a pro baseball team (± 4 years ago), the Expos; it is located at 5 minutes walk to the Olympic stadium.
The hotel rooms are as I remember; nice, large, clean and bright. As all the rooms are located in the back of the hotel; no street noise.
The lobby is large, but a little bit boring.
The room I got had a mini-fridge, microwave, free wireless internet (average hotels speed) and 2 double beds really comfortable. I would have appreciated two queens but it was OK!
This hotel is not downtown as mentioned by Expedia (I knew it before!) but it is a really nice location for a family with at walking distance: Olympic installations, Biodome (nature museum), Botanical garden, Saputo stadium (pro soccer), movies theatre and many restaurants. It’s also at less than 10 minutes walk to a subway station: in 8 to 10 minutes you will be downtown Montreal thru the subway. But as the parking is free at the hotel, you won’t have to pay the expensive downtown parking price!
The hotel have also a large indoor pool with a sauna (didn’t use it this time), a restaurant and a bar. The American breakfast was included with my room; it was a bargain as we had access to the continental buffet and we had service table for the “hot part” of the breakfast: we had French toast, pancakes, eggs (cook as I like, not the usual scrambled eggs), sausages, bacon… More than we expect!
The operation hours of the restaurant are variable; when I was there it wasn’t open at night and for lunch. But you can go at the restaurants located near the hotel (2 minutes by foot) like Score (family style with an impressive salad bar) or Madison steakhouse.
For the same price, you won’t find same quality hotel downtown Montreal and especially when you add parking price. If you don’t mind using Montreal subway (safe and fast) and not being in Montreal nightlife you will enjoy this hotel.
