Great location and beautiful on the outside
Very busy - so they must be doing something right
Breakfast was good - though I struggle with tea via the T bag fishing approach in a British Hotel - why no teapots?
The bedroom was dingy and uninviting - or characterful and historic depending on your viewpoint

The 1 BIG drawback was that our room was also a fire escape. The concept that you can break a cover and enter in an emergency is OK. The fact that the cover always fell off - and hence anyone could enter our room at any time is not acceptable. We complained and it was not fixable

Would not dash back

New owners, same old dive. Beer is poorly kept, food is awful and overpriced despite the Bull's protestations. Staff are friendly although lack initiative and autonomy. Fishing is eye wateringly expensive for some of the worst kept banks in the South West. This isn't the Itchen or the Test, it's the Coln. Whilst it could be a nice stretch, the litter, broken glass, punctured dingy, fallen trees and stagnant pools make a mockery of the £70 day ticket cost. Not to mention the abandon with which dog owners allow their beasts to thrash around in the few promising pools. Day tickets are available for the Coln at Coln St-Aldwyns and the village pub is much, much nicer.

Thank you for your review. We do not normally reply to reviews but feel on this occasion we must. We believe that as you make specific mention of fishing on the River Coln that it was your party of two who were trying to fish our stretch of river for free, being most disgruntled when challenged by myself and asked to pay for a day ticket. We had other people fishing on on the day who are very happy to come once a week throughout the year and enjoy our beautiful stretch of water. It has been endorsed by esteemed fishing journalists and fly fishing experts alike. We have people traveling from all over Europe and beyond to fish here all of whom are extremely happy and keep coming back year after year.

With regard to your comments on our food and beverage offer, I guess we will need to let the readers of this review decide on the motivation for your words.

This Hotel is obviously old and would benefit from being refurbished, the Staff are friendly and helpful.
The furniture is also dated especially in the bedrooms, plenty of Car parking at the front of the building except on Market day.
Lovely location and if the Hotel is refreshed it would be a great place to stay.

The hotel looked nice on the website, but the reality was rather different. Lots of little problems, which, on their own would not have amounted to anything serious, just compounded until the whole stay was ruined.

We were in Room 3, which had clearly seen better days. The floor had a definite slope to it, which is not a big deal, it did mean that the bed (a divan on castors) rolled across the room a few inches every time anyone rolled over during the night. By the end of the night, it was good 12 inches away from the headboard and the pillows were disappearing down the gap. The room itself was very dusty in places, the wardrobe door was hanging off and the radio, a wall mounted affair which looked like it was old enough to pick up the Light Programme, did not work.

The worst problem was the noise. The en-suite loo had a SaniFlow attached, which grumbled and churned very loudly every ten minutes or so. We figured out that this was due to the cistern constantly draining water in the toilet bowl, which, when it had reached a certain level, triggered the SaniFlow into action. Luckily, the stop-cock for the cistern was visible so we were able to turn this off and stop the noise.

The en-suite was carpeted, which I don't think is particularly hygienic.

Breakfast was nothing to shout about. You get your own cereal, juice and hot (well, tepid) drinks. Friends told me the cooked breakfasts were good, but, being a vegetarian, I only went for scrambled egg, which was OK.

All in all, I found the stay very poor value-for-money.

Room tip: Avoid room 3!

Visited The Bull recently with several friends and family whilst at the Royal International Air Tattoo, air show. On arrival found the pub area to be rustic and welcoming, although fairly empty. I asked for a menu and was given a nice laminated large sheet. A quick look showed the typical pub fayre on offer at typical prices; steak and ale pie £11 ish. Whilst looking at the menu, a member of staff spoke to the barman stating that they were in the middle of printed off the new menus as they had additional/new dishes to include. This was not a problem until I looked at the revised menu.
The prices had all been increased, all starters and deserts were now £7 and all mains were £14! Starters included a minestrone soup, £7 ? and typical deserts that you would really not be expected to pay over £5 at a push. Needless to say, we drank our drinks and left the pub for a more realistically priced pub along the road. I can only assume that the prices had been inflated to co-inside with the air show and if this is the case, shame on you!
