A beautiful hotel well situated in the high street. Breakfast was of an exceptional quality with home made jams and marmalade. We had an excellent meal in the restaurant. Close to westernbirt arberetum an lots of antique shops. The brasserie was lacking atmosphere and neglected.

Dear GillWatford,

Thank you for your review.

I am delighted you enjoyed your stay including the special little touches like the homemade jam and marmalade offered at breakfast time.

I am sorry you felt the Brasserie lacked atmosphere and felt neglected. As we offer two separate dining experiences, either the Brasserie of the Fine Dining restaurant on quieter days one may be busier then the other.

Kind Regards

Myself, my girlfriend and my mum took advantage of the lunch deal, £13.50 for two courses.

We loved the look of the hotel and all opted for a starter and main course. The food was nice but pretty scarce! I know £13.50 is good value for two courses but this kind of defeats the point if the portions are so meagre. Service was also somewhat slow. Furthermore, the waiter that served me, seemed to take exception to me placing my used napkin on my plate at the end of meal and haughtily plucked it from my plate and folded over it over his arm. Surely the napkins are washed after every guest uses them? This resulted in no tip for the French gentleman in question.

Overall, for lunch, the better option maybe one of the many little cafés that Tetbury has to offer. Those with big lunchtime appetites should avoid The Close Hotel

Dear Deadmeadow,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent lunch experience at The Close Hotel.

I apolgise that you were disappointed with your lunch and felt the portions meagre. Our ever popular two course lunch offered at £13.50 is great value for money but should still offer quantity. I apologise that on this occasion we failed to deliver.

I am sorry if you felt that waiter who is in fact Spanish was slightly offhand when clearing your table. He is a very personable member of the team and this is out of character for him.

I do hope you will visit again and give myself and the team another chance.

Kind Regards

My wife and I stayed here as part of a birthday treat. Having seen images on the hotel website we decided to treat ourselves and go for the food ans wine lovers package over 2 nights in one of their four poster rooms. This cost £450; however, given that these rooms are des described as their most luxurious we thought it was worth it - afterall the blurb on the website promises a stay in a recently refurbished and luxurious room.

Sadly the reality was very different (see photos). The room we had was on floor 1. The rooms and public spaces on this floor have not been refurbished and are in a dire state. The walls are grotty, the furniture is worn and the carpets are held down with aircraft tape. Spare fold out beds litter the corridoors with bin liners used to tie them closed. On arriving at our room I hoped this was confined to the corridoors. It is not. The furniture in our 'top of the range' room was badly worn and marked, curtains were ripped, windows frames peeling on the inside, cracks all of over the place and patchy walls where repairs have been made. Small things in the bathroom such as the toilet brush holder were also badly corroded. Soon after checking in I made the receptionist aware of our disappointment but was told that there was nothing that could be done as they were full (this is the truth - they were).

The level of service amongst the staff also differs highly. The receptionist on our arrival did not explain what our package entitled too, rushed us to our room with very little interest in making any conversation or slowing down her pace to allow us to follow up the stairs with heavy baggage. We were left to discover for ourselves that we should of been offered a champagne cream tea on arrival.

So are there any positives?
Yes, the areas that have been refurbished are very nice. The ground floor and second floors have been decorated in a mixture of rich colours with stone work exposed and the overall effect is very good although a little dark. There are also some very good staff who are passionate about what they do and take time to explain things (the host from Spain , sorry we did not get your name, particularly worth a mention)

The food in the restaraunt is also very good. Food in the brasserie is OK; however, it did take 45 mins for our main to arrive in the brasserie as the restaraunt seems to take priority.

So in summary this stay for us was a let down. On making our disastisfaction known we were told that floor 1 is in the state it is in as there was structural work that needed to first be completed. The structural work is now done but to the paying guest is not a good enough explanation when a hotels own blurb for the package we were on states a 'luxurious and newly refurbished room' (taken from their website. See page: http://www.cotswold-inns-hotels.co.uk/property/the_close_hotel/food_lovers.htm ).

I would recommend that before booking you check what floor your room is on and if paying top dollar avoid the four poster rooms until they are redecorated (I believe these are all on floor 1).

Stayed here just one night in May as we were visiting Highgrove the next day . .Arrived too late for an evening meal , the restaurant was very busy , but had a drink in the bar - beautifully decorated if a little small . We stayed in the Rose room , not yet refurbished so the furnishings were a little dated , however it was a very spacious room with a very large, lovely bathroom . It overlooked the gardens at the back and was very quiet and clean . Excellent breakfast , friendly staff. Parking is at the back of the hotel , and being on the High Steet the hotel is perfectly placed for a stroll around the lovely town of Tetbury .

Thank you for your recent review of your stay with us en-route to Highgrove.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay including our award winning breakfast and the friendly staff.

Your room is due for refurbishment in the coming weeks-I am pleased you found the room clean, spacious and the bathroom lovely, the garden view you enjoyed is certainly a real bonus to the room!

I hope to welcome you back in the future.

My wife and I stayed over for a concert at the arboretum nearby...
Tetbury is a beautiful small, bustling market town, and The Close Hotel nestles quietly in Long Street. The truth is, if I'd got to sit through a Boyzone concert, then I certainly wasn't going to skimp on the hotel....And we weren't disappointed..this place is the perfect balance of top notch service coupled with friendly professionalism...the decor is unsurpassed in any hotel I've recently stayed in, and the bathroom was massive and beautifully appointed. Everything was exactly where you'd expect it to be, and of the highest quality. The enclosed garden is the perfect quiet spot for afternoon tea, or a wedding reception I would imagine...
the bed was huge and comfortable, the breakfast was top notch and I can't find anything to fault....except, and this is a tiny thing I know, but there were quite a few woodlice wandering around our room when we got in later that night. Now that isn't the end of the world, but just took the shine off an almost perfect twenty four hours...
The staff of course were mortified when we spoke to them on checking out, and assured us that this was not the norm and would be looked into immediately.....
Would we stay there again?
Yes, if we're close by, most certainly...

Room tip: Don't leave the windows open at night...it lets the moths and flies in...
