This is a very un-special hotel. Reminded me of a Premier Inn room in style and comfort level but with an inexplicably large price-tag. We had a Superior Room for a couple of nights with breakfast on two mornings. I think the location was fine – not too far from most attractions in Edinburgh but then it is a very compact city. Our basic gripe was that the room had been cleaned lazily. There were dirty finger prints around the wardrobe door handles, thick dust covering lightshades, mirrors etc. The shower was ok but the tiling grout was pink and musty from the damp – a simple scrub would have fixed. I did not understand why our rubbish wasn't emptied, our 'complimentary' small bottle of water was not replaced after the first night, there were no tissues in the room's metal tissue boxes, why the tea and coffee tray was so mean. It was only when I scrutinised the (mucky) room folder that I discovered the hotel takes its eco-credentials seriously and as such “we encourage our guests to think green when they are staying with us”. Personally, if I had known this meant that, what I consider to be basics could only be provided “on request”, including basic cleaning standards, I would not have considered staying here. The room was absolutely devoid of any 'extras' and personal touches I would expect from a hotel rated so highly by the Scottish Tourist board. Breakfast was passable. Had to ask the chef to renew most of what was on the hot plate – skin off the scrambled egg, curled edges from the cheese etc. but no more than I'd expected by this point in the stay. And the hotel brochure was good enough to provide me with some more patronising 'eco' advice by reminding me not to take more sausages from the buffet than I needed. The hotel is owned by the Royal College of Surgeons and all profits re-invested there. Save your lungs from the dust in their average rooms and stay at a Premier Inn, giving the money you save on niceties directly to the surgeons charity, just like the owners of this place have.
