I would love to be more positive in reviewing this hotel, but unfortunately there were too many issues that need to be resolved before I could recommend it. Some of them are things that can be fixed, and I hope that they will be so as to improve visitors' experiences. We were told that they have only been open for two months so some teething problems are to be expected.
So first for the positive! The location was great - right on the main street in Salthill so there are plenty of places to eat within walking distance (I would recommend Roberta's a few doors down!). Also walking distance to the beach, and other facilities in Salthill.
The staff were helpful and friendly, and particularly the manager.
The rooms were spotless and beautifully decorated.
Now for the not so good. Some of these problems are because the building is listed, so I am not sure if it is possible to do much about it, but I do have a couple of suggestions! One of these problems is the size of the rooms. I certainly don't mind small rooms, we live in a very small apartment, but this was just too small! There was only room across the width of the room for the bed and one side table and lamp. The other side of the bed was up against the wall, so the person on this side of the bed has to climb across to get out! There was one chair at the end of the bed, and also a small shirt hanger. This meant that if you wanted to spend any time in your room, you basically had to go to bed! There was not much room to put a suitcase down, and nowhere to hang clothes at all. The shirt hanger thing was ok for a shirt or two, but anything else made it tip over. My suggestion would be even to have a hook or two on the door, or on the wall - this alone would have taken away this complaint. A small niggle was also that there were no shelves at all in the shower or bathroom, all toiletries had to go on the floor.
So be prepared - the rooms are tiny, but a few small adjustments would have made this ok.
Another problem with this being a listed building is the fact that they couldn't change the windows at the front of the building. This means that they are old and single glazed. And this hotel is on the main street in Salthill. So the traffic/taxi noise was very loud, the noise of people coming and going from clubs, pubs and restaurants was very loud, and to top it all, the road sweeper moved slowly and loudly up and down the street at 5am on both Saturday and Sunday. To add to this, we experienced very bad weather the weekend we stayed, and so the wind howled and rattled the windows to make for even more noise. The people that we traveled with experienced even worse noise and drafts from their room, but in fairness, the manager was able to swap them to a smaller (!!) back room, and they said the noise was much less and they were able to sleep. My suggestion would be to put some heavy, thick, lined, floor length curtains in to dampen noise and drafts. This would make the room look smaller, but hey, I would rather get some sleep!
The description states that there is parking available, but you should be aware that this is street parking, and near impossible to get a space. There is a carpark down by the beach, but it is a few minutes walk - not pleasant in the wind and rain. Fine in nicer weather.
My last issue is with the breakfast times - which can also be fixed. They don't start serving breakfast until 9am. As the rooms are so small, there isn't even a kettle to make yourself a cup of tea or coffee when you wake up. They suggested going to a cafe a door or two down the street which said that they opened at 7.30am, but we arrived there (in the wind and rain) at 8am, and the staff were just preparing to open, and just looked at us through the closed doors. We had a choice of driving into the city to find somewhere that was open, or buying a breakfast roll in Centra and eating it in the car!
So this hotel has potential, but also some issues that are fixable!!
Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the building!
