If you appreciate old world charm and want a reasonably priced hotel in a location that is absolutely perfect for walking to everything you need in historic Palermo,from the central station just a few blocks away to the Cappella Normanni, then the Orientale is the place for you. The building is 6 centuries old and it is exciting to imagine what is was like when it served as a palace so long ago. The rooms were comfortable and clean and Rosie at the desk was extremely helpful. It would serve you well to know a few words in Italian although Rosie knows enough English to get you what you need. The fresco on the ceiling in the breakfast room is breathtaking. We wanted a taste of life in Palermo and we certainly were not disappointed in the location and character that the Orientale offers.

Old palace, Marvelous pink stairs (Lots of them), Minimal breakfast but good cappuccino and hot chocolate. 80 year old father, mother and daughter proprietors. Very helpful and kind, anxious to please; speak little English. Great option of accommodation near central station with more character than regular hotel.

I've read about "decadent charme". I found no charme, just decadence.

The hotel is located inside a building full of value, which would deserve more maintenance and care.
We asked for a silent room and got a huge one not on the street but on the courtyard, with poor furniture and a very high window almost impossible to fully close, so not really silent.

Breakfast is served in a beautiful old hall, but is very poor, with rusk, jam, wrapped croissant and a coffee machine like those you find in offices.

Price was ok.

Location is ok, close to train station and local markets

This hotel, close to the train station, is housed formerly grand palazzo with a huge sweeping marble staircase and a beautiful courtyard. This is most definitely not a luxurious experience - the rooms are spartan but notably clean and fairly comfortable. A great option if you're on a budget and enjoy characterful, old properties.
