“Close to tourist attractions, but a bit lacklustre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

The inexplicably-named Hotel Orientale is located just a 2 minute walk from the central train and bus station at Palermo, and near to a lot of the main tourist attractions (churches etc) that Palermo has to offer. The hotel itself is situated in a magnificent courtyard, although once you get inside it is very basic. For some reason the room had a TV but no plug. There was air conditioning, but overall I would rate the room as a 2-star.

I would advise learning basic Italian because the staff don't speak much English. I arrived at 11pm and the night receptionist didn't speak a word of it, and also seemed more interested in watching the football on TV than serving me. Not the most welcoming start to my holiday.

If you want nightlife then I would suggest staying somewhere in the northern half of the city (Orientale is in the south) as I could find only one bar in an hour of wandering the streets.

This hotel is ideal for a tourist who is on a tight budget, confident with their Italian and wants to immerse themselves in culture. For the casual tourist who has a bit more money and perhaps wants some night life, I would strongly advise staying somewhere further north in the city.

“Affordable and Clean hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2010

We were attracted by all the decoration in this hotel. Very quite, big room, clean bathroom, that are all what we needed. Location is quite good and easy access to the main road. But there is no parking in the hotel, we had to leave our car outside the hotel.

“Convenient location, interesting faded grandeur, but not a great experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

We stayed for one night at the Orientale, based mainly on the convenient location for the station and good price for a quick stay. The hotel is very affordable and its faded grandeur is very pretty, if quite Miss-Havisham-esque! The welcome was friendly and our room was basic but clean.

However.. the drains smelt a bit in the bathroom, the location on the Via Maqueda is close to the station but unnerving after dark, and the room (overlooking a side-street) was incredibly noisy at night, culminating in a brass band striking up... at ONE AM! Breakfast was dismal, brioches in plastic wrap and a small coffee machine on the side.

Overall this is a totally adequate place if you need somewhere cheap and near the station. but next time we would either spend a little more for somewhere more comfortable or spend the same and go to a cosier b&b/hotel a bit further out of town.

“Dismal and depressing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2010

This was a bitter disappointment. we booked on the strength of Trip Advisor reviews and wish we hadn't. Although clean, the hotel is best summed up with just two words - dismal and depressing. We had booked for 2 mights but only managed 1 before deciding too leave. The advertised "breakfast included" was a voucher to a rather dingy caffe down the road

Not to be recommended except for those with very low expectations

“Comfortable and Clean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2010

I really enjoyed my stay at Orientale. The staff were helpful and friendly, the beds were very comfortable and clean and it opened out into a courtyard. Definitely a memorable stay.
