We would definitely stay in this hotel again and enjoyed our stay in Amsterdam.
Hotel good points: Genuinely friendly staff, impressive contemporary hotel design, close to train & tram stops, flatscreen tv in room & free movies on demand, clean, very comfortable bed
Not so good: 15-20mins to city on tram but hotel close to tram. Impressively efficient use of space in bedrooms but it is a bit cramped with not a lot of room for bags or clothes - fine for short break
The hotel is located less than 5mins walk from Zuid train station which is great for access to schipol airport and to other towns in holland.(e.g. We travelled 20mins on train to Utrecht which is a lovely town and worth a visit for a few hours)
Prinses irenestraat tram stop is even closer. The tram infrastructure in Amsterdam makes the whole city very accessible.
Amsterdam highlights for my wife and I would be 1) Anne frank house (30mins queue on a quiet day if tickets not bought online), 2) Utrecht, 3) heineken experience (very enjoyable) 4) huge selection of restaurants with flavors from all over the world!
Naturally we had a look at the red light district also!
Amsterdam lowlight would be our decision to visit a coffee house on our second day. We gave into our curiosity and decided to try a brownie (space-cake). We fooloishly thought that brownies were a safer way to try this experience. 1.5hrs later, we still had felt no effects. Then it hit us. Words cannot describe what a horrendous experience it was. Panic, nausea, paranoia, fear and a heavily drunk feeling give a idea of how we felt. We returned to our hotel. We feared we were having heart attacks and confided to hotel staff. They were absolutely fantastic and looked after us for a few hours until we felt somewhat ok again. When it was over we were embarrassed but they never made us feel bad about it. We subsequently learned that brownies are a lot more dangerous because the effects are so delayed, that you cannot tell if you've had too much. So if, like us, you are inexperienced and do give into temptation when in Amsterdam, our advice is a) do not use brownies, b) do not do it until familiar with Amsterdam as you may not find your way back and c) it may be safer during the day for the same reasons
as point b.
