I probably would have booked and enjoyed The Exchange on Damrak's top rooms had they been available, but they weren’t so I thought that De L’Europe should be checked out as one of the finest that Amsterdam has to offer.
It is indeed the nicest Five Star I have been to in Amsterdam, although still suffers from lack of space, commensurate with Amsterdam Central itself.
The service is impeccable, all of the staff are truly international best in class hotel professionals and deliver nothing short of five star service, although one serving lady behind the bar looked like I had just named her Sisyphus when I ordered some wine, a little grim.
Really nice evening hours in the plush lobby and bar areas with a truly classy pianist and truly classy clientele, I didn’t see much riff raff, if any.
One of the best parts of De L’Europe that people who know Amsterdam is its wonderful water level terrace right at the end of the central canal belt. It has to be one of the best terraces in the city. The problem is, even as a Hotel Guest, you can’t always get a table there, it isn’t big so it isn’t surprising, but it is an amazing terrace for when the sun shines, but don’t rely on getting a spot on it even if you are staying there.
Small but plush room, and perhaps that is one of the impressions that you are left with, that it is a beautiful hotel, pure class…how Five Star Hotels in Amsterdam should be (but are not), but the rooms are just so small….then again that could be said about every Hotel in Amsterdam aside from the Suites…
Great to have an Ipad already hooked up to the Wifi next to the bed, really easy and inexpensive way of giving guests the ultimate way of finding out anything about their location…you can order room service from it too…
High end TV and channels to match, Bose sounds, well-stocked mini bar…super comfy bed and a view of the roof of the lower levels. I am sure that some of the rooms must have amazing views however mine did not.
No Bath in this room…disappointing for Five Star...it has to be said…
Check in and Check out was easy, very…
Requested and was granted a late check out on the day I left, which is always a sign of a good Hotel, they can’t always do it if they are full, but if they have late guests arriving or can shuffle and do if you request it then they can go to a lot of trouble for you for free…so that was nice…
One of the finest locations in Amsterdam, much more the better end of town…although not far from the tourist strips…
Excellent Concierge as all Five Stars should have, have to wait for a Taxi though, having said that if you are staying here you want to be Central and probably walk, which you pretty much can to most places of interest…
A really nice experience but to be honest I am left thinking that for the price the room was just too small…
It is certainly worth considering that this is one of Amsterdam’s finest Hotels if you are planning a high end trip here, unless you go for suites then you won’t get much better than this as Standard Rooms. There is a massive difference between this Five Star and some others that are not very far away at all.
Then again, the price reflects it.
This is a stylish Hotel, not hip stylish, old school stylish, old school Amsterdam in a great location.
